How do i upgrade from v1.0.2 to v1.1.1

I am another happy iphone user way far from the US and i own an iphone that i bought unlocked with v1.0.2 and i'll like to know step by step how or where to find info to upgrade my phone to v1.1.1 successfully with no problems and without having to use an AT&T SimCard during the process for the activation since that carrier does not exist in Costa Rica my home country
