Breaking out of jail
So, newbie here, bear with me (or please tell me where it's more appropriate to post)...
I'm not sure that iphoneInterface is really breaking out of jail. Here's a transcript:
==========================
[~/phonedmg]% ./jailbreak
[jailbreak 1.0] by ziel w/ special thanks to GeoHot, iZsh, roxfan, Nightwatch and the rest of the #iphone-dev crew.
Looking for iPhone...
Sending Files...
*** If iTunes is running, please close it.
*** Hold the POWER and HOME buttons for approximately 25s.
*** Release when the display says 'Please Connect to iTunes'.
Sending More Files...
Booting iPhone...
Waiting for iPhone to finish booting...
Moving files into place...
Rebooting iPhone...
Enjoy your newfound freedom. Thank the devs at #iphone next time you see them for making this all possible.
p.s. Like most other useful tools, this one may be dangerous if used carelessly. Always remember -- You brick it, you bought it.
p.p.s. I have no idea how 'My Humps' could possibly have gotten set as your ringtone.
[~/phonedmg]% ./iPhoneInterface
iPhoneInterface v0.3.3 built on Jul 11 2007
Waiting for phone... established.
iPhone state: Activated
type "help" for help
iPhone:/# ls
.
..
DCIM
Photos
com.apple.itunes.lock_sync
iTunes_Control
==========================
Now, that doesn't look very much like a jail-free environment... Should I be seeing more files, a /bin and /etc for example ?
Cheers

Yah, when that happens, try running jailbreak again, and see if it changes. Its a little finicky...

weird coincidence- I was using manzana today and instead of the normal file directory I got:
iTunes_Control
Photos
DCIM
com.apple.itunes.lock_sync
just like cowboy up there. I tried it mutiple times and still not working. I don't wanna restore my iphone cause its still syncing properly with itunes. is this happening to anyone else? does anyone have any ideas?

That means you need to jailbreak.

Hmm - it's just not working for me [sigh]. I must have tried this about 30 times now, I've restored the phone to factory settings for about half of those. I only ever get the jailed environment :-(

Do you have the restore file unzipped in the same folder as the jailbreak and iphoneinterface program? (phonedmg)

Yep, at least I think so. Here's a listing of the directory:
694-5259-38.dmg
694-5262-39.dmg
Firmware
Makefile.osx
Makefile.win
MobileDevice.h
README
Readme.txt
Restore.plist
Services.plist
iPhoneInterface
iphoneinterface.dev
jailbreak
kernelcache.restore.release.s5l8900xrb
main.cpp
tree.cpp
Thanks for the help :-)

Hmm. I'm not sure what you're doing wrong, but its something...

So, it seems my problems have been solved by using jailbreak 1.1. I updated the phone to the latest patch, found the 1.1 version of jailbreak (I had been using 1.0), and I can now see a proper / ...
iPhone:/# ls
.
..
Applications
Library
System
bin
cores
dev
dropbear
dropbear_dss_host_key
dropbear_rsa_host_key
etc
mach
private
sbin
tmp
usr
var
... interestingly enough, in iPhoneInterface, "mkdir /xxx/yyy" works, but "putfile xxxx" doesn't. Perhaps there's still a few things to get sorted...

This is on OSX. I've attached the 1.1 version of jailbreak that worked for me :-)

Ah - sorry. I misread the ] as a 1. It is still version 1.0...

So, it seems jailbreak itself may have been working all along, and it was iphoneinterface that was not... If I run the previous version of iphoneinterface, I don't appear to be out of jail, but if I run the one in the attached archive, I am out of jail :-)
So download and try this one, if you're having problems... Only the OSX binaries are in the ZIP file - the windows ones make it too big to attach...

Why is it that when I run the iphoneinterface from that attachment, I get "cannot execute binary" errors? I'm on a PPC mac.
