iTunes Syncs then stops

When trying to sync iPhone with iTunes it would copy contacts and calender then I get a message says...

Attempting to copy to the disk "iPhone" failed. The device is not connected.

Then the iPhone would not show up in iTunes anymore.

And iPhone shows "Sync in progress"

This is happening on a friends macbook who visited here from Vancouver, I unlocked the phone for him and now he's back there

His iPhone is on 1.1.1 FW, unlocked, jailbroken and iTunes is 7.4.2

Is there anyway to fix this without restoring?. If he does have to restore, will he have to jailbreak,unlock,activate again?

has he tried restarting the iphone and computer. try a different usb port etc. if all that fails might have to start from scratch
