iRinger can do SMS tones as well as ringtones.
If your iPhone is jailbroken, you can use the built in SCP feature and use the M4A extension.

I figured you could add more SMS tones to the iPhone, but you can only replace the 6 that already exist.
In this directory:
/System/Library/Audio/UISounds/
There are six tones:- sms-received1.caf
- sms-received2.caf
- sms-received3.caf
- sms-received4.caf
- sms-received5.caf
- sms-received6.caf
So, to replace them...
Make sure you have an SSH server on your phone (install OpenSSH from Installer app)
Open iRinger, create the sound you want
In iRinger, click Export, uncheck the "export to iTunes" checkbox
Select "no gap" in the looping box
For Ringtone Title put: sms-received<n> (<n> = a number 1 to 6)
Check the "Export via SCP"
in the SSH dialog:
Enter the details to your phone's SSH server then for the Target put:
/System/Library/Audio/UISounds/%TITLE%.caf
Hit "Go"... and you will have the custom SMS tone.

u using a mac or pc? If using a mac use AFP to access the files and you will be good to go. But the above mentioned method does work as I have changed mine. To make your own sms sound get a mp3, open quicktime and click export then as a .caf. Rename it sms-received6.caf, replace using above method, restart phone, go to settings, sounds, new text message then select Elactronic and it will be your new ring. Hope this helped.

Hey,
just download the latest version of QuickSMS from Cydia
QuickSMS - all you need for messaging
Then once you have made your sms tones you can use them on individual contacts

I followed these instructions that apparently I can't post the site's name on here... but it's as follows:
step 1.
get the file you want and open it in goldwave(free program) http://www.goldwaving.com/downloads/gwave525.exe or any other music software and save it as ".aiff"
step 2.
and they need to be named sms-receivedX.caf (change X to Number between 1 and 6 depending on what sms tone you want to replace)
step 3.
then ssh into this folder and put your sms in there
"/System/Library/Audio/UISounds"
I used i-FunBox | File Manager and Hi-Speed Transfer Tool for iPhone and iPhone 3G (iFunBox Download Page) to ssh into my phone, which i find is the easiest way to do it, just copy it straight over! perhaps make a backup if you ever want to use whichever sms tone you are replacing...

I've followed these instructions. I've tried the multiple ways. Everytime I choose on the sound or receive an SMS, there is no sound. I've copied the .caf file that I sent to my phone and it plays fine on my computer, but it won't play on my phone. The sound is only two seconds long. Any help would be appreciated.
