For Windows iPhone Would-Be Developers: Does this interest you?
Hey all,
This is Drakenza--if you don't know me, I wrote iDemocracy. If you don't know iDemocracy...
Anyway, I've been messing around with the iPhone SDK and Toolchain and love it, but it took a whole weekend to get it compiled and running on my Vista PC and even longer to make it work on Leopard.
It occurred to me that nobody had automated the installation or shortened it. By stripping out the copyrighted stuff and redistributing pre-built llvm, toolchain, etc, and then retrieving the libraries from a jailbroken iPhone, you could do the whole toolchain installation in something like 15 minutes
Just wondering if anyone would care if a wrote a program to do this and started a Google Code project, and then redistributed the supporting built files (about 500mb) on one of those file sharing sites (probably Megaupload, as it offers a 500mb size). Then you'd have to download the 500mb file, the small GUI installer, give it your iPhone's IP address, and it would SCP off files from your iPhone and put the toolchain on your computer. This is confirmed to work for Windows XP and Vista for building just about every open-source iPhone app out there, as well as your own.
Also, if anyone knows, what's the legality on distributing the vfdecrypted iPhone restore image? If I distribute files from that image, would that be considered legal? Would it be legal, then, to distribute the lib files off an iPhone?
Thanks
Drakenza

wow im truly in the presense of greatness. iDemocracy is a fantastic program. Your Idea sounds innovative seems to really lay down some bricks. Regretably I have noprogramming experience so I can't help. But I think this could help others like myself learn.

I would love something like this. Would help for developers as well, to get them more likely to develop, or just save them time.

OK, if people are actually interested in this kind of thing, I'll start putting it together.
Suggestions for a name are welcome
I'm thinking winChain, or the very original "Drakenza's Toolchain Installer" (not really, just kidding).

awesome man. been trying to make my toolchain work on my vista. no luck at all. i keep getting errors on my cygwin and everytime i find a solution for it another one pops out. if you can make a GUI text editor that can compile iphone apps, that would really be cool. something alot of people would be willing to pay for. hehehe

Hey all,
winChain 1.0 has been released on winchain.googlecode.com so you can go download that now. Unfortunately the preBuiltToolchain that is required for it is still uploading to MegaUpload.com and won't be done for a couple of hours. A link will be posted tomorrow morning.
winChain 1.0 comes with the toolchain builder, as well as an iPhone Application Template builder which can generate a whole iPhone project for you that you can edit and then build.
EDIT: I'll also try and torrent out the preBuiltToolchain for those of you who prefer BitTorrent.
Happy coding, everyone! If you need help with Objective-C I can lend a hand at [email protected], but don't ask me for a full ObjC tutorial for Dummies

Great idea, toolchains are a pain usually to install.
I used to do some PSP homebrew and awaited and easier way to get ready for the iPhone. Seeing as Februaury and apples release is still a far way off, i'd love to play with it now and looks like your project will give me the start i needed.

Check winchain.googlecode.com!
winChain 1.0 is now officially released, and the preBuiltToolchain is up as well.
Please, please send feedback to [email protected]
Actually, the moderators/administrators can close this thread now, as it's kind of served it's purpose (I know that some people are interested, and the project has been started).
I'll make another thread later announcing the release...Last edited by Drakenza; 12-02-2007 at 11:26 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

If you can't/don't feel like donating, please at least Digg it.
http://digg.com/apple/winChain_Sets_...within_minutes
And spread the word so we can have more sweet iPhone apps
Also, winChain has been updated to 1.0.1 as of December 3rd, 2007. Fixes a little bug in copying some files so that the toolchain goes where it's supposed to.
If this works for you please send feedback to [email protected]!Last edited by Drakenza; 12-03-2007 at 11:55 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Glad everyone likes it. Return the favor by making some great apps for us to use

You can now get the preBuiltToolchain with BitTorrent from TPB (http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3920191). I assume it's OK to link to a torrent site because the torrent is perfectly legal, but if the mods/admins aren't OK with a link to the Pirate Bay, let me know and feel free to edit the link out of this post.
