Maybe you should mention to think about setting the server.bind parameter to prevent others steeling those documents you store inside your /var/root/Sites right through the air ;-)... Maybe set that par as default...

    Added parameter
    Code:
    server.bind = "localhost"
which prevents other people from accessing your "Sites" folder on your iPhone. It means that only browser on your iPhone can access files hosted on your iPhone.

If you want to enable again that everyone in your local netwok can access your hosted files, all you have to do is to comment (add # sign) in front of server.bind parameter to apper like this:

    Code:
    #server.bind = "localhost"
(Reminder: The code above is located in /usr/local/etc/lighttpd.conf file)

I also added instructions in English inside .zip file in the first post.

What exactly is the problem? Can you download anything else from Installer?

After about 90 minutes of tweaking, I've now got this up on Installer for those of you who don't want to mess around in SFTP etc. Although, I find that funny - since then you'll have to SFTP to get the files to read on there anyway.

Clear the installation queue in installer and reboot your phone. It helps.

I've got mine working now, and I've got 2 problems/questions:

    1. The directory it started me out in shows an 'images/" directory as well as the files hello.pl, hello.py, and hello.rb Is that correct? I can go under images and I can open the 2 images files there which are bg.png and iphone-webserver2.jpg via the browser.

    2. After I was done and had the viewer hack working, the image for installer.app (the one that shows on the Featured page) is gone with the standard ? sign in it's place.

    Thanks for your help!

    Default Please help me . . . . I am going banannas!!!
    Hello,

I've got nearly the same question. I followed all the instructions, but I typed the modification manually line for line using Mobile TextEdit. Now when I go to "http//127.0.0.1/" or "http//localhost" I see the following below:
    images/
    hello.pl
    hello.py
    hello.rb

    When I go to "http//localhost/.dirlist/" or "http//127.0.0.1/.dirlist/" I see the following :
    dir-generator.php
    iPhoneArrow.png
    iphonedirlist.css
    iPhoneToolbar.png

What am I doing wrong, or what have i neglected to do? I am using MobileTextEdit - how do I move my PDF, Word, etc, files and where and how (step by step) do I put them? I have DropCopy installed and use it for file transfers. Should I use another application.

Please help . . . I am completely new to this and even if I can follow direction, at this point I am funkin' LOST!

    Thank you . . . for any and all help . . . .

    I did this
    view PDF's without Wi-fi

all i did was install lighttpd (that's it) and edit some files with WinSCP

    edit /usr/local/etc/lighttpd.conf
to the beginning of the file add this dir-listing.activate ="enable"
    find #server.bind = "127.0.0.1" and remove #
finally: go to /private/var/root/Sites, rename index.html to any thing ei: index1.html index0.html

it worked on the 1st try. then i turned on my Wi-fi to install some PDF. Turned Wi-Fi off. went to 127.0.0.1. Internal Error. WTF!

On my issue, I get the same results using http//127.0.0.1/.dirlist/

Since my image on my installer.app is gone, I was assuming that my default directory for images was changed (or something similar). If someone solves your problem, they'll solve mine too.

Thanks for anyone who can help!

Still have this problem, Lighttpd is ok - i installed and got welcome screen but could not install PHP. i even cannot install any soft from site "Conceited". may be my fw is 1.1.4 or the problem of "Conceited" site.

Is there any other way to install PHP from other sources ?

Please help. many thanks Mr. V-O-Y-A-G-E-R !

    Well -

I got my problem solved, and now I can upload my documents to where I want and access them pretty easily!

I just went to the '/private/var/root/Sites/' directory and opened the lighttpd.conf file and changed this line from this:

    server.document-root = "/private/var/root/Sites/"

    to

    server.document-root = "/var/mobile/Media/Docs/"

and I copied the .dirlist directory and it's contents to the directory as well. This is where I had my documents on my iPhone and is why I chose to change it to that, and with the .dirlist directory there, it provides iphone-ish interface to browse my files.

And strangely, my installer.app image icon reappeared as well.

I'm pretty much in love with this hack now. Thanks!

    Chad

Lightbulb I think i have a couple of answers...
Same problem here..I read some where last night that it is the way the latest version of installer validates the URL. Sorry I can't remember the site I was on because it was like 4 am here and I was zoning.

Here is how I worked around it:

There are websites out there that let you log in and create your own repo by choosing packages from different Sources. I don't know if I am allowed to tell you site's url so you will have to search.

I found 3 different sources for PHP. I then added my own repo link to installer and voila!

got it working on my 1.1.3 8gig.

I also noticed that I couldn't open a chm file to save my life so I installed mobileCHM and set it to use lighttpd for display. (in settings there is a toggle for Apache or lighttpd) it works fine now!

MobileCHM even added a chm folder to my 127.0.0.1 directory. COOL!

    link to MobileCHM:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/89476259/CHM.zip

    then:

    chmod +s /var/Applications/MobileCHM.app/MobileCHM
    chmod +s /var/Applications/MobileCHM.app/clit

if your apps are not in var and this doesn't work then you might want to try:

    # chmod -R 755 MobileCHM.app/MobileCHM
    # chmod -R 755 MobileCHM.app/clit

I guess you can PM me and I can tell you the one I used. Maybe a Moderator can let us know if I can post the URL.

can you ssh into your iphone? or use an sftp program?

I connect to my phone via an sftp program and drag the files over to the var/root/Sites folder and they show up in the list when I go to mobile safari.

you can add folders within the sites folder to create a display directory.

I don't see any reason for you to have to navigate to http//127.0.0.1/.dirlist/.

what you are describing is what it is supposed to do. you just need to add documents...

Let me know if this helped. I could be in the wrong ball park from your question

    Everyone can freely delete

    images/
    hello.pl
    hello.py
    hello.rb
files and folders. Those are files that lighttpd made and you don't need them. Also, if there is index.html, you can delete it. Only .dirlist should stay in Sites folder prior to copying any other type of files you want to view with Safari.

    Thank you for your reply
my question is how do I add files to .dirlist (I would really appreciate it if you can guide me step by step)

By the way when using Mobile TextEdit and editing then saving - most times the changes don't even happen. The file goes to the way it was before. I don't understand this. I try rebooting the phone to see if changes may take effect that way but no dice.

I am running a iPhone unlocked with ziphone on 1.1.4 that my brother got me from NYC. I am in Greece now and am trying to figure this out and it's driving me up the wall.
How (exactly) step by step) do I add either word documents, or PDF files to my iPhone or .dirlist? What do I use can i move the PDF files on my iPhone using MobileFinder (and I don't even know how to do that) can I send them through wifi using DropCopy?
Do I transfer using dock and some other program maybe the Mac utilities program Terminal.app ? - and if so what command lines do I type to send the files to iphone and to the .dirlist so I can see them in my web.browser and what address do I type in the web browser.
    I am really confused . . . .
