xGPS, Navigation for the iPhone
xGPS is a Cydia App that allows function of the iPhone 3G GPS and other supported external GPS modules in this turn-by-turn application. The first version of the software features that were left out by THAT company, with the next version to expand upon its success. Help support xGPS and be a part of the community.
There have been quite a lot of bug fixes and extra features to the latest version of xGPS.
The major new additions for version 1.2 are:
* A first beta version of voice navigation in English is now implemented and the speech engine does a pretty good job of pronouncing the directions (see the first video above). It will need some future tweaks to correctly pronounce abbreviations (like Rd, Blvd, Pkwy, N, E, S W, slashes, etc), but other than that it does a very good job.
* GPS coordinates are now accessible under the GPS settings menu.
* A Night Mode view is now available under the User Interface settings menu. Night Mode can either be manually enabled or automatically through a timer from 8pm through 7am. The timer is currently fixed, but will be fully customizable in a future release.
* You can also have your iPhone/iPod play music at the same time when using the xGPS application. The voice directions will be played through the music (see the second video above). It would be nice to have the music fade in/out when there is a voice direction.
The new version is in beta and is expected the 20th of February. Visit xgpsdev.xwaves.net/forum and support the project!
Dont forget to pick up the current version, 1.1, on Cydia via the xWaves repo (cydia.xwaves.net) or your MMi Repo!!

Wish you would release more beta builds. The US one right now isnt even worth trying. How about releasing more builds as they come?

Right, but considering the USA situation (where you can't use Current GPS Location), this software is not really worth trying for US folks. Wish they would fix this first in 1.2.

I use XGPS everyday. You got an issue not using current location? drop a pin in the maps app and navigate from there.
Really is quite simple if you put your mind to it. For the first full fledge GPS on iPhone I think its awesome!! I have no problems with it whatsoever and any improvements will just make it even greater!
Roll on version 1.2!!!

The drop pin function in the current version of xGPS is really is used as a frame of reference. You can drop a pin by searching for Places/Cities (Using and address or City/State name) and it will drop a pin on that location.
If the GPS is active though, you cannot scroll through that map to that point, but can zoom out to get it in your frame of reference and go from there.
New updates to the software are coming soon, and will help a lot in navigation, so stay tuned.

From what I've read so far my understanding is I need to use this GPS over wife only? Or does it work over 3G too?

xGPS Can be used over Wifi, 3G or Edge.
There is a xGPS Map Manager for Mac/Windows/Linux that also allows the user to predownload maps and place them on the iPhone for xGPS to read, therefore allowing you to save you data plan, and speed up navigation.
