Got Cowbell?
If you've got a fever and an iPhone, I may have your prescription: a cowbell application. This "app" allows you to turn your iPhone into a $400 slightly-more-portable version of a cowbell.
You can download this app, well, a trinket really, from here: http://mauvilasoftware.com/general/2...kle-fever.html
Don't expect much...all I did was to take a little heart rate tap-it-out program, and put a huge cowbell in the middle of it.

UPDATE: It's also available on Installer and Cydia.Last edited by JLA; 03-05-2008 at 02:12 AM. Reason: on installer

haha, thanx for this

i love the old snl-sketch with "yes... THE Bruce Dickenson..."
tried it, and it works, but is it just me, or is the tone for the cowbell "not-quite-there-yet"? but anyways i love it! canīt wait to show it some other hardcore Blue Oyster Cult-fans

That's fine by me.
This was essentially a 45 minute application for me...the coding took about 5 minutes, and the mediocre graphics and sound took up the rest of the time...it's very likely that the sound is non-typical, but I've learned that there is no single cowbell sound...they are all of different pitches and timbres. The Will Ferrell one sounds a lot like a coconut, while others sound more like bells. I think the sound I used was somewhere between, perhaps closer to Low Rider.

The sound can be replaced by finding a wav file, and renaming it "Cowbell.wav" and placing it in the /Applications/Cowbell.app directory.
The original use of the app was something to check your pulse with...e.g. if you are jogging, and you have your iphone/IPT, you would run the program and tap everytime you feel your pulse. The number at the bottom of the screen is the beats per minute (or cowbells per minute). It can still be used for this purpose. On the other hand, the antifebrile properties of cowbells have not been consistently demonstrated by any double-blind randomized clinical trial.
I've also got a Maraca/Tambourine app that uses the accelerometer...one day, all of the "trivial instruments" may combine into a single app, either by me or by MooCowMusic...no point in junking up the SpringBoard.

Does Pianist, Guitarist, or Drummer work? They all use pretty much the same sound mechanism...I wonder what about Ziphone would cause it not to work...

Hmmm...I'm baffled. Does the CBPM meter change when you touch the cowbell? Does the "Use the space!" message flash ever?
If that stuff works, but you still don't have sound, the only thing I can think of is that someone lowered the volume on alerts...you can reset that via the iPhone General Settings menu. (I think it says "Restore to default settings"...you may have to do it twice...I'm not sure what else that resets...)

I think it would be neat if it (synthesized) different sounds based on where you hit the cowbell

I was actually planning that originally but I got lazy. Perhaps I'll break out the cowbell code again soon.
