Osu! for the iPhone and iPod Touch
Hello everyone. A few months ago I began development of my first iPhone/iPod Touch app to learn how to use the SDK and it has escalated into a rather large project. My first idea was to port the game "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!" or "Elite Beat Agents," when I became aware of an existing project called simply "osu!" for the PC, which you can learn about here:
osu! - rhythm is just a click away
The osu! community is rather large already and there's a dedicated team of people working to make it better and better, including a large number of people making songs for the program (known as beatmaps). I got in touch of the writer of that program and got permission to port the project to the iPhone and iPod Touch platform, letting me take advantage of the already thriving community and many beatmaps available. Fast forward to today and development has come a long way, but still has a long way to go. At this point though, I'm ready to open beta testing to a closed number of individuals. Note, this really is beta testing and there are still many bugs and things to do before a public release is really ready. If chosen for beta testing, you should be ready for crashes and general incompatibilities and report any bugs to me so I can work on fixing them. The project is also still under development so new features will probably be coming in all the time.
If you're interested in beta testing, please PM me with your Email address and which device you have and I'll get in touch with you regarding repository information. Please feel free to check out the above website for osu! and download the excellent game for the PC (currently only available for Windows). Maybe even try making a few beatmaps yourself
Here are some screenshots of the current progress of the game.
One of the first screenshots I made of just parsing the beatmaps and generating the objects:

Best. First post. Ever.
That looks great man; looks like you put a lot of work into it and it's going to be awesome. I wish I had that type of talent.
Glad you posted it here, nuudles!Last edited by ALL DAY; 12-07-2008 at 12:57 AM.

^Mhm, and how is that, cutie? There was nothing going on tonight, therefore I was on MMi on and off while working in PS and on my phone, hence me posting more than usual and seeing more topics (assuming that's what your problem is.) I meant first post by him, by the way; notice his post count.

It was a statement that I wish more people would come to MMi and have first posts like that, not "Hai guiz: ii upgradez to teh new firmware number 2212 even though ppl told me nottto and nao my unlock iz gone. Kan u halp me!?!?!?"
I'll try to post less so as to not annoy you, personally, anymore.
At least my posts are a)helpful, b)comments/constuctive criticism, or c) welcoming and encouraging, unlike some other people.
By the way, I have a natural aptitude (or "talent" if you will) in the field of Psychology (this is a prime case of the fundamental attribution error, in case you didn't know) as well as jet-skiing among other things. Just a fun fact to let you know I'm special (or at least my mommy says so) and do indeed have some talent to go along with my super-human ability to "hunt for first post". /sarcasm

It's really hard to say. I'm coding the entire thing myself from the ground up, while also teaching myself the specifics of iPhone programming (though I've had experience on many other platforms). If things continue at their current pace though, I'd think it not be too much of a stretch to say maybe sometime during the holidays I'll have something out for public release.

osu! iPhone has been submitted to the ModMyi public repo. Comments, bugs, and such should be directed to the main osu! forum here as I am much more active there than here:
osu! - View forum - osu! iPhone
Note, if you're a beginner to this type of game, here's a good guide to some of the easier songs:
STEP ONE: The Beginning
Welcome to the osu! Hotel!! My name is Pokebis and I will serve as your guide!
If you're new to osu! and have no idea where to start Step 1 is certainly the right direction!
Here you will learn general beat hitting, hitting to rhythm, hitting to vocals, and some minor mouse control.
Welcome to the world of osu!
Your Rhythmical adventure begins here.
Also remember to look at the mode I'm suggesting, these are all easy maps.
1) ORANGE RANGE - Ikenai Taiyou [Beginner] --This is a really good welcome map to your wonderful osu! journey! Click the circles when the shrinking circles overlap; those are called beats. The circles that extend are called sliders; they do the same thing except a ball comes out; keep your mouse button held and move the cursor over the ball in till it reaches the end! When a large circle appears on the screen hold down the mouse button and spin the cursor in circles, this is called a spinner and if you are fast enough you may pick up some bonus points! Also when none of the things I mentioned earlier appear and a painted circle or X appears don't do anything, it's a break you can rest. This song is good to learn the basic skills, if you find it too easy you can skip to #4.
2) Silvertide - Devil's Daughter [Easy] --This map is good for practicing spinners.
3) Steel Angels - Kiss Kara Hajimaru Miracle [Easy] -- This map is a really good foreshadow of what's to come. Try to click to a repeating beat.
4) Catherine Warwick - Pollyanna (I Belive In You) [Easy] -- This is where the real fun begins. Try to find patterns within the song to help you follow them.
5) Neon Genesis Evangelion - Cruel Angel's Thesis [Rei (Easy)] -- Really listen to the music in this map as it goes along. This is where the beats are really relevant to the song and you need to listen to the song to know when to hit them. This map also introduces double beats which are beats on top of each other. You'll know when you see them.] Also watch out for 1-2-3 combo's that go back and forth, they can be tricky. Also the notes are smaller now, but still pretty large compared to harder maps.
6) Jonathan Coulton - Code Monkey [Easy] -- This map is a really great display of how to follow the tempo of a song.
7) Nights: Journey of Dreams - Dreams Dreams (Will Version) [Easy] -- This map teaches you how to follow vocals in a song. Try and tap when they say words.
8) KOTOKO - agony [Easy] -- This song has a lot of sliders that repeat. If you haven't learned by now, when there is a bent arrow on the end of the slider that means to keep holding onto the ball the other way.
9) BrainCells, SnappleMan - Scrambled Eggman [Beginner]Mini-Boss alert! -- This map may seem a little tough, but if you can beat it that means your making some progress! If you have trouble go back to some earlier maps and brush up (also you could try and improve scores while your at it!)
BOSS) Hyadain - CRASH!! (Let's do it) [Easy]Boss alert! -- Now it's time to put what you learned to the test. Apply what you learned earlier as this map has a lot of just that!
BONUS CHALLENGE) Initial D - Running in the 90's [Easy] -- Here is another nice beginner challenge map, try it whenever you feel.
Step Two: The beat begins
Refresher) Arashi - Love So Sweet [Easy] - Use this map as a nice refresher for what was covered in the last step. Pretty Easy. Note that the heart-shaped slider starts going to the left. An arrow will pop up to help you know which way to start on that slider.
1) All American Rejects - Swing Swing [Easy] - Now you may want to start taking into consideration beat spacing. Beat spacing usually is a very helpful way of knowing when to hit a beat. If beats are closer together, you should try to hit them within a shorter amount of time. If beats are far away. allow a longer amount of time to hit them. Also allow spacing to help you identify patterns that may occur in different ways. Also note the little circles that connect each beat. They always follow to the beat right after it, so use this to identify the order in which to hit the beats.
2) Alestorm - Nancy The Tavern Wench [Teatotaller]
3) Hatsune Miku - Miku Miku ni shite ageru [Easy]
4) The Wingless - All the World in One Girl [Easy]
5) The Black Mages - Battle Theme (Final Fantasy VI) [Easy]
6) Michiru Yamane/Masahiko Kimura - Bloody Tears [Easy]
7) Animal Crossing - DJ KK [Easy]
8) Hatsune Miku - THIS IS SPARTAAA!!! [Easy] Mini-Boss Alert!
9) TAITO - Snow Melt Into Water (JET de GO!) [Easy]
BOSS) Puffy Ami Yumi - K2G [Easy] Boss Alert!!
BONUS CHALLENGE) Jakazid - Cillit Bang (Hardcore Mix) [Easy]Last edited by nuudles; 01-20-2009 at 08:14 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Nuddles,
Great Job! Overall, excellent app. I had Elite Beat Agents for the DS and loved it. This is a great replica of that and "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!" I like the fact the a community is updating songs and there is a wide variety of songs...much more than EBA. Will new songs be added through Cydia upgrades for the app? Because I'm use to EBA on the DS, the simple/easy levels were doable. However, I believe a first timer or beginner would have great difficulty passing even the easiest of levels. Great job is porting the app to Cydia before the appstore
Nuddles,
Also, while in a game/match if you could add a pause function and maybe even the option of quitting/ending the game and returning the the main menu. The only way to exit to the main menu is to lose on purpose. Thanks.Last edited by Maximus54; 01-21-2009 at 03:01 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Thanks for the compliments! As I described in the homepage:
osu! iPhone
There is a pause function that is obtained by touching the screen with two fingers. It's a little sensitive so it may take a few tries before you pause it. Regarding the songs, osu! iPhone downloads them from the same source as the official game so as people create and upload new songs, they're immediately available on the iPhone.

As I requested, please report any bugs to the official forum. This issue has already been reported and a workaround posted:
osu! - Login
I've also updated the iPhone page to talk about this issue:
http://osu.ppy.sh/p/iphone
Note, if you get the "Downloaded file does not appear to be a zip file..." error when downloading a beatmap, the permissions of the /var/mobile/Documents should be changed to 777 or the owner should be changed to the "mobile" user. After changing that, please remove the osu folder from the /var/mobile/Documents directory and restart osu!.Last edited by nuudles; 01-22-2009 at 07:12 AM.
