Update the Baseband?

So i finally updated my iphone from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3. I was reinstalling programs and i saw there was an update for the baseband. Is this necessary? what are the benefits of doing this?

The only conceivable benefit would be that Google Maps Locate Me will work without first running LocateMe or Navizon.

If you have unlocked your phone, don't do it, but if you are running a legit AT&T phone, then you can.

I've upgraded my 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 and used iJailbreak and AnySIM to unlock it (had 3.9 bb).

After upgrade (only 1.1.1 to 1.1.3) I can normally use locate me function in Maps.

How come, unless the bb got updated somehow too?

Well if you updated through iTunes, your baseband will be upgraded...
