Hello all, and Hello BigBoss!
Categories sounds great indeed!
I've updated to 1.53 and, well, I still can't make it work. Nevertheless, I'm confident in your great work (hehe!) so I know that sooner or later, i'll be able to use it.
Categories is the app I'd been dreaming of ever since I got my iPod Touch!
so THANKS

oh, do you believe in karma?!
I didn't, but just after I said thanks for the great app, it started working
I did just the same as before.
Must be karma

Well, mine's pretty unstable, but I'm not worried. I mean, it just yells at me
and thows a few punches,
but it has terrible aim - hasn't been able to hit me once yet, and I'm standing right in front of it.
Usually it calms down after a couple cups of coffee...
Other than that, though, it's great.

Hey, I'm using 1.0.2 and I cant seem to change the background no matter what I do. When i set the settings to off, I just get a black background. When I turn it on I get the default blue background. I've went into the categories.app and changed the default.png and the launcherbackground.png to an image I want. I also went into each of the folders and changed the default.png to the image I want. Nothing seems to work. I using the latest verison, 1.53. Anyone else had this problem?

01-11-2008, 05:54 AM #109In 1.0.2 you get the black background instead of the summerboard background because it doesnt know how to use summerboard 1.0.2 themes. But you are close. What you should do is this (order is critical) - for the example i'll use Games.app for the category:Hey, I'm using 1.0.2 and I cant seem to change the background no matter what I do. 1) Name the backgorund you want "Background.png" and put it into the app folder in /Applications/Games.app and overwrite the Background.png that is there.
2) In categories main config, set "Use background" to ON (this gave you the blue background)
3) Load the app where you replaced the Default.png (in the /Applications folder). It should work. Hit "screen" to resave the image, close and reopen the category and see if it worked.
Sure. Each category is its own app. Just make a 60x60 png file. Put it in the /Applications/{category name}.app folder and name it icon.png. Overwrite the one that is there. If you want to add icons to categories for use in the future, just add them to /Applications/Categories.app/icons folder. Currently, STE's update script will overwrite this, but I asked him to change that for this use case.is there any way we can make custom icons for the categories?
Haha thats pretty funny. What sort of quirks are you finding? Has 1.53 messed up your display order file or are you finding other things?Well, mine's pretty unstable, but I'm not worried. Well, was being facetious. Althugh last night, I did run into one thing I consider a "bug" or "quirk":
Shai has a package on his repo for "350 additional icons for Categories", so i installed it to check it out. It's pretty big - 1.3mb - so after checking them out, I decided I didn't want them, so I uninstalled the package. it poped up and said that even though I was uninstalling it, the icons had to be manually deleted from the Categories folder, so instead of doing that (thinking I'd need to manually uninstall ~350 icons using SSH), I thought I'd just uninstall Categories and reinstall it. Easy enough, right? Wrong.
When I uninstalled Categories, it also uninstalled my custom folders, and none of the icons in them came back (meaning no way to launch Customize, among other things.) Fortunately, I don't put Installer.app in a custom category for just such a reason, instead leaving it directly on Springboard. So I was able to launch Installer, re-install Categories, and re-create my custom folders, but my point is, shouldn't uninstalling the Categories app leave any custom folders created? Or at least, shouldn't there be a prompt when uninstalling, asking or something? I do understand why it deletes them, but IMHO it should be an option, not a rule.

Hotstuff2 - The uninstall doesnt work for 1 reason. Categories doesnt support subfolders under the icons folder. So if I added an install script it would delete all the icons.
Sure, I can make it delete all and copy the orginal, but what if you added others after or before that arnt part of the original package.
Another option is to create a backup of the icons folder when installing, and restore that backup. But what if you added icons after the install of my 350 icon set?
The best solution is for categories to be able to read out subfolders. That way we can treat the icons folder same way we do all the image folders in customize.
Just my opinion. Sorry to cause anyone a headache.
for some reason http://ste-pkg.org/iphone-apps/zips/categories-1.53.zip doesnt work, so if someone or bigboss can post a zip with the original icons, I'll create an uninstaller as a temporary solution.-Shai Perednik

01-12-2008, 02:32 AM #113This should have been fixed in 1.53 *if* you ran 1.53 as the first version you ever ran. What happened in older versions is that the backup of the display order was made a bit late meaning it could have been modified already by the time the backup was made. On 1.53, the backup is made first thing. When you uninstall now, it should restore exactly what you have the moment you installed as your display order. Unfortunately, if you ran say 1.52, it made the backup, then updated to 1.53 after, it would be too late. Hope this makes sense. When I uninstalled Categories, it also uninstalled my custom folders, and none of the icons in them came back (meaning no way to launch Customize, among other things.) Fortunately, I don't put Installer.app in a custom category for just such a reason, instead leaving it directly on Springboard. That's not entirely true. You could manually removepath every icon individually for 300 some lines of files to remove rather than just removing the icons dir. I know that sucks, but it would work.Hotstuff2 - The uninstall doesnt work for 1 reason. Categories doesnt support subfolders under the icons folder. So if I added an install script it would delete all the icons.
Shaiss, I am going to move the icons folder to /var/root/Media/Categories/Icons in the next release. The reason I'm doing this is that STE has updates set up to erase the categories dir and recopy everything in. Your icon pack will be blown away on the next update. Perhaps I can also allow for multiple icon dirs. Also, it is an undocumented fact that categories will only recognize the first 500 icons it locates in the icons dir. We can talk about expanding this, too. Shais, do you ever hang out on irc? Come find me on efnet in #iphone and we can come up with a good solution together if you want.Last edited by BigBoss; 01-12-2008 at 02:36 AM.

Help!!!!
Well I installed categories on my iPhone using 1.1.1 and installer.app. It worked fine at first... or so it seemed. After trying to add a second category it would not add apps to the category. I removed all the categories and went to installer to uninstall the app... only to find that as far as installer was concerned, it had never been installed. I then went to the install section and tried to re-install Categories, but when I did this installer would just crash. By some stroke of luck I finally managed to re-install categories, and then I was able to uninstall it via Installer. I was dumb enough to give Categories another try. Installer crashed while installing it, but Categories appears on my home screen. It will not let me add apps to a category that I create, but installer will not let me uninstall the app. I try re-installing it, but Installer crashes and nothing happens. Is there any way for me to manually remove Categories and all its files from my phone via ssh or sftp?

I'm sorry if it's been answered already - I think it's been asked.
Is there any solution for not being able to hide the camera and photos icons?

01-12-2008, 01:30 PM #116Unfortunately, it sounds like you're suffering from the low disk space problem that many others have had. If installer doesnt think the app is installed,it is because it never finished installing itWell I installed categories on my iPhone using 1.1.1 and installer.app. It worked fine at first... or so it seemed. This was probably the stem of all the problems. Here is my thread that explains the problem and suggests some solutions. By the way, with the recent flood of apps, many people are running into similar problems: http://www.modmyi.com/forums/showthr...light=bosstool
I will add this soon. It is going to be a bit of work though. In the meantime, the only solution I can give you is, install camera pro, install photoboard, then use customize and just hide the camera and photo apps. Then move the camera pro and photoboard apps into categories. Is there any solution for not being able to hide the camera and photos icons?-BigBoss

BigBoss: Thank you I installed BossTool (after removing some other stuff) and switched over my wallpaper, which gave me enough room to maneuver and fix my other problems. Thanks so much for the quick reply.

Not sure if this was covered in the previous replies, but is anyone else having trouble with the "settings" default icon showing up instead of your custom one when putting it into a category?
Anyway around this?
This is about the only problem I'm having with the app... Other than that, it's fantastic.

01-12-2008, 07:45 PM #1191.54 will fix this. It's because it looks for "Preferences" in the summerboard theme rather than "Settings". Notice it also calls it Preferences. Thats the real name for the app.Not sure if this was covered in the previous replies, but is anyone else having trouble with the "settings" default icon showing up instead of your custom one when putting it into a category?-BigBoss
