Okay, I found the two folders. But it really doesn't help me much. While it is easy to put the boards into the "chessboards folder, the default pieces are in the root of the pieces folder. Since I assume the app looks at the names of those files, I cannot simply replace the originals. I have several sets of pieces. They should probably go into subfolders, but I don't know if Caissa will recognize those.

A further problem with the pieces is that the original pieces all have different dimensions. So I need to know how the pieces are placed (top/left or centered?). This is important for my pseudo 3D pieces, since they are not placed in the center of of a square. So I would need to add some margins.

I was wondering that myself... how to change the pieces to other sets. Right doesn't seem like it allows it.

Make sure you get 0.84 build tonight, it will address many stability problems.

I will have to look into the code. That area wasn't touched for a month. As I recall, the intent was to have all pieces in a separate folder, under pieces. The set name will be picked up by the name of that folder. I am not sure, if it works at all.

if it doesn't, I will fix it tonight to the spec above and will send you and Eurisko nightly 0.85 build.

    All:
SDK is about to be released things will get drastically different from that point and onwards. We just welcomed 2 new developers. Now there is 4 of us in the team and we gained good momentum. I hope these new changes won't kill our project as we know it.

    UPDATE

0.84a is out. It will take custom pieces nicely

So any info on placement coordinates? I would hate to do this on trial and error basis...

So I downloaded 0.8.4 and installed manually. It comes up with the splash screen and the crashes. Anyone has it working?

It worked for me after I moved the pieces into a folder called "Normal" at the path /var/root/Media/Caissa/images/pieces/ and deleting the preferences plist com.byteeasy.projects.caissa.plist

I've decided to try my hand at creating custom pieces...no idea on this either though.

I have it working fine, but I used installer. I can do a particular sequence of moves and crash the game, though. Reported it to ioffe this morning.

It is not straightforward install for 0.84. if you want to do it manually, you need to remove your saved preferences.

Yep, that did it. I think I'll install the source, so I won't run into this problem again. I've figured out the coordinates and I'm almost done saving the pieces (boards were easy). So I should have everything ready tomorrow.

No problem. Feedback like is as joyful as $5 donation

Make sure, you run the latest. I am addressing stability problems with every release. The latest available is 0.84b. I am mailing nightly builds to some devotes, like HotStuff2. He singlehandedly cought and reported half a dozen problems. I think he deserves his own donate button . If you can find some time and send me bug reports(informally). That would be great help and contribution.

BTW 0.85 nightly can undo castlings and has undo crash(#67) addressed.

    ioffe,

I just donated some chess boards and pieces

Do you think it would be possible to have a visual preview of the boards (just two size-reduced squares) and the pieces (e.g. the pawns) rather than the text names? Or maybe little preview icons next to the names? I think a good way to implement this would be to include a preview.png for the pieces in the folder and maybe a boadrdname_pv.png for the boards.

It looks so darn good, I am speechless. Can you please point me to your donate button ?
All I have in Caissa donations is heading your way. Not much though, but we all know that only day jobs can keep us afloat.

I am not the biggest Quartz specialist, but I know how clip the designated area from an image. Totally possible, but requires some coding. I am not sure if board preview will make it to 0.85, but I'll open a ticket for this task now.

Also, can you shoot me an email to ioffe AT caissa dot us.
I want you to have our latest 0.85. It doesn't have known bugs. It just works and looks plain gorgeous thanks to you.

Now I am thinking whether I want to package an addon or make it part of the standard distro.

    You are the best,

I'll reserve judgement until I see it.... I've got some graphics myself, but I don't think I can compete with the legendary armadillo.

You keep your donations. I hope you get some more. I am happy to contribute to your project. You can use the boards and pieces as you see fit.

Actually, I didn't like the online stuff, so the all of the boards and 2D pieces were made entirely from scratch. The alpha and cheq pieces are based on freeware fonts, but modified to look decent.

As to the previews, I think it might be easiest if I provide the preview images and you just put them in the list (take a look at Converter.app; that app has little icons at the left of the categories list. That's what I have in mind for the boards and pieces.

I think the main image is up on the Wiki, and while they're cool, I actually like the "classic" look of Caissa. I was working on a very similar set of graphics, however. Might still, as I have the high-res PNGs for them, just need to resize them. I based mine on House of Staunton pieces...

Lemme save you some work, since I've been there and done that. The House of Staunton pieces are gorgeous, but you can't preserve the looks when you go down to 32 or even 36 pixels. Trust me, I've tried. Also, the ones on the Wiki are just one of the options (and it's not my favorite set either). You should check out the others as well...

I've actually gotten pretty decent detail with the pieces set to 40x40, which is what ioffe told me they were supposed to be sixed to. I just stopped working on them since I like the "head only" look better. I like your pieces, but I think the white doesn't contrast with the board enough. I have the perfect board in mind, and am working on it now. I think it'll look quite nice combined with either your pieces or the "head only" ones I've been working on.

Sorry, 40x40 is the square. You need to give the pieces some breathing or else it'll look cluttered. The largest piece can only be 36x36 and that is stretching it. I think that the optimal size is 34x34. Additionally, the proportions of the pieces must be considered. They should not be of equal size. But, hey, go for it. I'm looking forward to your images.
