It's called Caissa; I installed it, exited installer, and my iPhone locked up. FInally hard-reset it, and the iPhone FINALLY rebooted. When it came back up, it was installed, and it plays perfectly.
Very, very nice app. I'll forgive the installer issue.

I've noticed that when changing the options (board or pieces), the game will abend and exit. It seems to remember the options though, and on starting it again it plays fine.
A little buggy, but overall very nicely done. Another fine addition to the iPhone games collection.

Start playing - great way to learn!
Everyone should know how to play chess...at least the basics. You have to learn to think 3 moves ahead, minimum. And you have to anticipate where your opponent moves, and think 3 moves ahead of *that*. Hard? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
No.
This one is made by Boris Ioffe, and Ste has it on his repo. It's very well done, IMHO. Could use a few changes, but all in all, a great chess implementation.
No.
It's strictly 1p vs CPU or 2p, but is only on the phone, not multiple phones.
That's the loading graphic for it, and the game should start right after that. What firmware are you? Runs fine for me on 1.1.1.

I'd definitely like a future version to include the option to take back moves...

Generally works Great
I am running 1.1.2 and generally it works great. I have had it crash once or twice and once or twice, it said a move was illegal (which was legal)... but an amazing start.

Next version 0.83 will be out on Monday. It will include undo functionality and some other gameplay features

Sorry. Early reports show no luck with 1.0.2. In order to enable it to work on 1.0.2 I need to downgrade my phone and rebuild the toolchain, which I will not do under any circumstances. Things will change drastically in Feb., no point of doing that. That is being said, Caissa loves 1.1.1 and pretty stable on 1.1.2.Last edited by ioffe; 12-27-2007 at 09:30 PM. I assume you're the author? If so, bravo - you've done an excellent job.

Looking forward to the new version; and I totally agree with the 1.0.2 observation. No point in it, as people should upgrade to 1.1.1 (I mean, c'mon, what's the point of staying with 1.0.2?
) I gotta admit, though, even on the easiest level (-4, the default), the game AI is brutal!
The undo will make it much better, since I find myself moving the wrong piece occassionally (darn these big ol' fat fingers of mine...)

Nice thing about Caissa is that you can add your own Chess boards. Makes it look quite a bit better.
Get "iPod & iTunes for Dummies", it'll change your life.
