    Default Pumped

The app for November 5th is “Pumped” subtitled “your personal portable fuel log”. This app is so great! It lets you track your vehicle gas mileage. It is so easy, you just enter in the gas price, gallons of gas purchased, and current odometer reading. After the second log it begins to track miles traveled, gallons used, total fuel cost, miles per gallon, cost per mile, and cost per gallon! Great usable app!

I've had this installed for a week or two now. I'm not really using it because:
    • Gas is sold by the hundredth of a cent price, so instead of $3.00, it's actually $2.099, which over time can add up.
    • Quantity is by the tenth of a gallon, so instead of 10.5, I might have put in 10.55 gallons, which over time can also add up.
    • Both of those can (and will) affect the tracking, especially if you're anal about it like I am.
    • Pumped needs to add an entry for the date the gas was put in, and that way, one can track when the vehicle was fueled up as well as all the other info; it should also track what the MPG was between fuel-ups that way.
    • I was inputting info, which I typically keep records of in Microsoft Money (using the notes field), and if I start from the newest and work my way back, Pumped shows negative miles driven, so I think the date field would really help correct that issue.
It's a good start, IMHO, but needs some changes to be actually useful.

    Default Increase to Fuel Quantity

I wuld ask that the fuel quantity allowed be increased above 20 gallons. For a vehicle like mine, 20 gallons is only 2/3 of a tank....

    TIA,
    $n1per

At least I'm not the only one who was thinking those things.

I actually emailed the author right after installing it, and I said all that to him (actually, I cut-'n-pasted all my comments above from my email to the author), but he never responded.

I didn't think about the gas maxing out at 20 gallons (I only have a 12.5 gallon tank), but yeah, for large trucks/SUVs, they have much bigger tanks. Heck, there might even be a trucker somewhere with an iPhone who would find this useful, and they have double tanks that hold 50+ gallons each. It should allow a LOT more.

Come to think of it...there should be an option for the person to specify how large their gas tank is, so the app can track how much is left in the tank and more accurately determine what the MPG/fuel cost is. Most gas tracking apps I've seen (and truth be told, I've only looked at a few and didn't like any of them) have that option.

edit: heck, while I'm at it, I'd like to see an entry for "oil change", so the driver can track how many miles it's been since the last oil change (and conversely, how many until the next one is needed.) Would like the ability to specify how many miles between oil changes the user wants (some people like me do it at 3k/3 months, others at 5k, others use that extended 10k oil...)

What we really want is an app called MPG that was for the Newton (and later the Palm, I think).

The author is lurking around iPhone development, so maybe something is coming... looks like he is working on his Pocket Money app first.

BTW, you should never enter gallons, but instead price per gallon so it can compute a more accurate gallons figure.

I would prefer entering both, so as to keep more accurate records.
