ToggleBacklight Application
ToggleBacklight is available from the MMi installer.
The first time you run ToggleBacklight, it saves your current Backlight level, and sets the level to the minimum.
Each time you run it afterwards, it saves the current level and switches back to the previous level.
This allows you to easily toggle between two backlight levels - set the level you want, run the app, then set the second level you want.
To install, unzip the folder, copy the folder and contents into /Applications on the iPhone, then set executable permissions on the ToggleBacklight executable file itself.Last edited by NetMage; 07-30-2008 at 09:39 PM.

Thanks for the app. I have a couple of suggestions. I'm used to using a Nokia which has almost unlimited profiles. When I'm in the office for example, I change it to "Office" profile and if I'm in the cinema, I change it to "Silent" for example.
With the iPhone, I constantly have to toggle between the brightness and the silent vibrate.
Now, with your app, I can easily toggle the brightness level when I'm reading an e-book at night. Before, I would have to lower the brightness to the minimum and then have to change it back again in the morning.
What would be great is if your app can do multiple profiles, whereby it'll save the settings I have set for silent (vibrate on/off), new voicemail (on/off), new mail (on/off) etc.
Or at a minimum, will you be able to allow the silent (vibrate off) option?
It'll save me a couple of steps since at night I do not want the phone to notify me of anything. Right now I have to turn down the brightness, and go into the settings panel and change "silent -> vibrate -> off".
Thanks.

I like the idea of including an option screen. Maybe a floating button that one could click to access the options screen that disappears after about 5 seconds... *Just an Idea :P* Anyway, the inclusion of a toggle for vibrate, and what to notify for (via vibrate) and the duration would be cool too.
Nonetheless, I like this app very much!
I have it set to double tap via xLaunch, and it is great. The simplicity is really what makes this app so nice

Making it handle profiles is an interesting idea - may be just switching between two as a default, and having some (?) method of picking a profile from a list (tap then hold?) that still allows the quick toggle between two profiles.
Unfortunately, adding profiles will require figuring out how the existing Preferences.app notifies the system about changes in Preferences now - somehow I doubt if editing the on-disk preferences will cause the system to notice a change. That will probably take a while to figure out.

I would be perfectly happy with just how it is with the addition of turning off the vibrate on silent. But I suppose once you figure out Preferences.app, when you figured it all out anyway.
Even w/o the profiles, it would be really convenient for some of us, esp those who read ebooks at night in bed
Thanks.

Just upgraded to 2.0. This app no longer works. Not sure if I did it right or not. Can the author please verify?
Here's where the app is installed with the permissions set as below. The app starts up, and goes back to the home screen, but the brightness level remains the same.
iPhone:/Applications/ToggleBacklight.app root# ls -al
total 52

This is one of the apps that I miss most. I find myself turning the brightness up/down frequently (Gotta show off pics of my 4 mo. old to coworkers). I def hope that there is an update for this app soon. I wonder if this app could go in the AppStore? I'd def pay like $0.99 or $2.99 for it.

I don't think apple allow app that changes brightness, so I doubt this would ever be on the appstore.

While I have requested Apple add an API for backlight brightness, I am not holding my breath.
At this time, I am planning to release for jailbreak on 2.0 once I get a new toolchain going under Cygwin. Or maybe on my Mac.
