SLINGPLAYER FOR IPHONE IN THE NEWS MARCH 14, 2008-Can Apple Say 'No' to SlingPlayer?

Can Apple Say 'No' to SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone?
Date of artcle: March 14, 2008 01:52 PM

Harry McCracken over at PC World has asked some of the tough questions in the days following Apple's announcement of the iPhone SDK, which opens the doors for third-party commercial applications on iPhone. Presumably, one could expect Sling Media to take a hard look at bringing Sling-shifting TV capabilities to the touch friendly phone.

However, Harry's analysis brought up the question about what will be forbidden in the Apple iPhone Apps store. Unlocking programs, porn, and privacy invading apps will be forbidden (obviously), but the non-descriptive rule about "bandwidth hogs" raises some concern for Sling owners. Streaming video would be considered by most to be a bandwidth hog, which could mean that SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone may not be allowed to be distributed through the Apps store. Whether or not a Wi-Fi only version of SlingPlayer would be allowed, but such a program would seem limiting once a 3G capable iPhone makes its inevitable debut.

While this is only speculation about what that particular rule means, it does invite some good discussion on the topic. How would you feel if Apple said "no way" to a SlingPlayer on iPhone? What would you do? Post in the comments below.

Check out Harry's article over at PC World for more thoughts on the iPhone SDK.
