I am debating on breaking out the old 3G to make sure all my apps still work on 3.1. I might just wait for the 3GS to be finished

How did you jailbreak 3.1? Or did you?

Good good. I would hate to have to stay at 3.0 for eternity. Although that would still be better than being unjailbroken. Just saw news of pwnage 3.0 or whatever being released soon. Only for Mac though. Guess PC users will have to wait for a Redsn0w update. I dunno.

I've just always heard that restoring from iTunes backups isn't the best way to restore as it carries over corrupted data. So it seems with Pkgbackup and Appbackup you can restore a jailbroken iPhone and set it up as a new phone headache free. Right?
Using AppBackup & PkgBackup, I was able to go from jailbroken with all my jailbreak apps installed and set up how I wanted them, to restored as new phone, app store apps and settings back in place, and jailbroken with jailbreak apps installed in something like an hour, hour and a half. Only thing I had to do manually was download PkgBackup first thing after jailbreaking (gotta have the app installed to use it to restore) and reconfigure the jailbreak apps' settings, cuz as far as I know there is no solution for storing the settings for them, but that only takes a few minutes anyway.

RedSn0w can not preserve the BB. For that you need pwnage.
When it is available people with Macs will, I'm sure, make illegal customised FW available for those that don't have Macs.

So are you saying that after Mac users upload the custom 3.1 firmware, PC users can just point redsn0w 0.8 at it and jailbreak it that way?

No, just restore the custom FW in iTunes for 3G, bit more difficult for the 3GS

So PC users will restore the custom firmware in iTunes, then what? Then point redsnow towards it?

Ok I'm getting confused. Pardon my ignorance. So we'll just restore in iTunes with the custom FW and automatically be jailbroken? Why haven't they always just done it that way then? Sounds easy. Please elaborate.

Yes. Because the Dev Team always follow the law and they don't distribute custom firmwares as the ipsw files are copyrighted by apple.
They have always had a tool to let you make those yourself though (pwnagetool).

I restored from PkgBackup to 3.1.. I was stuck in Safe Mode. Had to restore again and manually install all my Cydia apps again...

Mac users have always had to create the custom FW first.
PC users have just let Mac users do the hard work.

pkgbackup really doesn't seem to like FW change...
