    Default rename ApolloIM to iChat
I have ApolloIM in my dock and I was wondering how I would go about renaming it to iChat or something similar. I know I can edit LocalizedAppliacatioinNames.strings to change the names of Apple apps, but none of the third party stuff shows up in that file. I thought about renaming the .app folder or editing something in info.plist for that app but I was afraid I would screw the app up and then not be able to uninstall and reinstall, or have to restore the phone. If anyone knows how to rename third party apps, any help would be appreciated.

Just try renaming the app and app folder. You can always "uninstall it".

OKay, renaming the .app folder doesn't work. Any other suggestions?

i think you need to rename the folder and the app inside the folder... so rename apolloim.app into ichat.app and inside the apolloim to ichat...

if you open the info.plist file for any program you want to change (or look at the info in installer.. the so called "identifier"), you can add that key into LocalizedApplicationNames.plist in the /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/English.lproj directory

For example, to change ApolloIM to iChat, you would add this to that file to change ApolloIM to iChat:

    < key>com.alexrocks.apolloim< /key>
    < string>iChat< /string>

edit* leave out the spaces in front of key and string, i just did that because my web browser was hiding the keys and strings for some reason lol

    This worked perfect! thank you!

I figured poetic_folley was right too, I just didn't know it would work if it wasn't an "apple" app.

I just installed finder with the installer app and used that.
Navigate to the app you want to rename and click the info button. You can edit the name right there. Super easy and it seems to have worked fine.

I didn't rename anything in the dock but it seems like it'd work anyway

Would this throw off the updating software process through Installer.app?
