SBSettings 1.07 free memory vs. Free Memory.app

SBSettings (v.1.07) tells you how much free system memory you have.

There's a new app in the appstore called "Free memory" which also claims to tell you how much system memory you have, and, with the press of a button promises to free additional memory.

What's strange is that SBSettings consistently tells me I have more free memory than Free Memory does. In fact, SBSettings generally reports free memory in the range of the post-buttn-press free memory that Free Memory tells me I have. [I hope that's clear]

Personally, I trust SBSettings and Big Boss more than the Free Memory app, but I'm wondering what others think.

What's the discrepancy? I usually have about 25-28MB free and I don't run any apps that have a daemon running.

i think i read big boss explaining what he considers free memory, and maybe, some of "that" is what free memory "frees" when you press the button, or someting like that ? :P

Right now SBSettings says I have 30MB free, Free Memory says 13 MB free. Once I hit the "Free Memory" button, it goes up to 19.5 MB free.

dunno

right now i had 39 and i pushed the reboot button.

i only have the following mobilesubstrate stuff:

5 icon dock
sbsettings
winterboard

and i think that nothing else.

that might be the reason.
only phone app is shown on the programs sbsetting plugin

i had 58 mb again after reboot.

edit: wich went down to 40 after a few seconds.
i noticed the number went down after i installed the locations toogle and activated a few toggles i wasnt using before.

Here's a quote from BIgBoss regarding SBSettings compared to other apps when showing free memory:

"I consider both free and inactive pages to be free memory since both can be used by a new app trying to load. Most apps would probably only count “free”. That is probably the difference. Inactive pages are pages that are no longer in use but are still held by the OS for whatever reason."

Quote taken from his site.

Basically SBSettings also shows inactive pages as free memory thats why it shows a bigger number.

there is an app called TOP that will show you your processes through mobile terminal
*install, open mobile terminal, type top
unfortunately, I do not know how to kill processes

there is however a new task manager program!!! It is similar to SysInfo. (if you have a 2G, you may know what I'm talking about) Anyways, it shows you ALL the processes running and you can kill individual ones.

It was originally written in Chinese, but SkeredMobile was kind enough to translate everything for us!
*this link is to the second page of this app where you can find SkeredMobile's zip file to download

http://www.modmyi.com/forums/native-...-manger-2.html

You DO need to ssh both files in the necessary folders then type (/private/var/root/Media/Postflight) and hit ENTER in MobileTerminal, then it should be working

MANUALLY adding the program WILL be totally worth it, I PROMISE

hope this helps. there's a thanks button that will show me it did

Cheers,

MrB
