Default Howto use Aventail with PDANet
A bit of a hack, but this seems to get round the limitations of the aventail connect VPN not working through PDANET.

Make sure that you have OpenSSH turned on, and running.

I'm using a Linux host (Kubuntu 8.10), so setup the Ad-Hoc network as described here:

[ubuntu] iPhone and PdaNet - Ubuntu Forums

Once you have network connection, you can actually turn the WiFi Router off, and things continue to work, so I expect this to work with expired version of PDANet as well.

Determine your iphone's IP address on the AdHoc WiFi then do (as root on your linux laptop):
    ssh -v -L 443:FQDN.MY.AVENTAILBOX.COM:443 [email protected]
and login with your root password (which you have of course changed from the default, or better still use keys).

It should be possible to do something similar with putty on windows.

Now you point you aventail VPN client at 127.0.0.1 instead of FQDN.MY.AVENTAILBOX.COM. Here I'll show the command line client as it's more obvious.

    # startct
    --------------------------------------------
    AVENTAIL CONNECT
    --------------------------------------------
    Enter Appliance HOST/IP(Default[127.0.0.1]):
    Connecting...
    Connected
    --------------------------------------------
    SELECT LOGIN GROUP
    --------------------------------------------

And we are in business. PDANet give us the iPhone connected to AdHoc WiFi and celluar data at the same time. Port forwarding through SSH gives us the ability TCP level connectivity to get to the Aventail VPN concentrator.

Good luck, and hopefully this is useful.
