Themes without winterboard for speed
I'm trying to completely avoid installing winterboard, as it really seems to slow down the phone. I understand how to manually change some things, like sounds, and I'm sure I can figure out changing SMS bubbles, etc (I'm hoping I can found out how to enable wallpaper and blank the dock background).
Will I just be doing the same thing as winterboard and slowing it down by adding graphics (bigger files I guess), bigger sounds, etc. Or am I still omitting other files that winterboard loads, thus speeding up my phone?
My take is that if winterboard has to load xx MB of files to handle all the theme settings, I could eliminate some of that load be not having it installed, therefore the only extra memory it would require is the difference in file size for the replaced files.
On a side note: Or am I in completely the wrong direction and it's not possible to do some of the winterboard settings without winterboard, because I thought winterboard just modifies the files on the phone and keeps a record/backup, allowing an easier removal or uninstall of said theme/mod.
Thanks

You can manually overwrite each icon.png in each application folder. But I don't think you can enable the wallpaper background without winterboard.

winterboard takes up 10mb of system memory when running. seriously....ipod, safari, notifier, etc all run with about the same.
