DTunes Causing Problems - Dimming
Since I upgraded to firmware 2.2 and reinstalled all of my application I've been having major problems with dtunes.
When I quit dtunes my screen dims and stays dimmed until I restart the phone twice or mess with the brightness on SBSettings.
Anyone else experiencing this or have a solution?

I do not have 2.2 yet(I have to wait until I am at home in a couple of weeks), but my screen dims everytime I do something with my springboard. For example...if I change something in Winterboard then SBsettings dims my screen all the way down.

You know, after i upgraded to 2.2 my screen dims at random points. I installed Flashlight and tested the APP. BAM! the screen dims, and basically the backlight died. I was a bit worried and reinstalled the Firmware and the backlight came back on. I dont know what it is but with 2.2 people have been complaining about dim screen.

I experienced the same problem, although I was able to restore my brightness by turning automatic off and rebooting. I downgraded to dTunes 2.5 and have no problems so far.

I experienced the same problem. Mine started when I touched the brightness icon on the dTunes music player. That sucks!
@DaveiPhone - Where did you get the old version of dTunes?

Here:
http://modmyi.com/repo/2debs/dtunes2.5.deb
To install it:
-Make sure the MobileSafari Download plugin is already installed on your phone (through Cydia or a previous install of dTunes).
-Go to http://modmyi.com/repo/2debs/ and download dtunes2.5.deb.
-Copy it into the phone in /var/root/
-Using Terminal, SSH into the phone (or use MobileTerminal on the phone) and enter:
-dpkg -i /var/root/dtunes2.5.deb
-Respring or restart the phone.Last edited by DaveiPhone; 11-24-2008 at 04:16 PM.

This has happened to me twice - I don't know what I was using the first time - maybe dTunes - I had it on the phone and noodled with it.
The second time was tonight and I was using BigBoss' Flashlight.
I can see the contents of the screen, under a bright light, and the objects respond to the touch, but
the Brightness setting sliders in Settings don't respond.
The light comes back on when I restore but what a PITB!

Hi,
I fixed the problem last night.
Version 2.64 is now in Cydia (2.2 compatible)
Including Random Shake and improved screen dimming.
Basically what happens is when dTunes loads it looks up the current brightness from the system plist file.
This value is then used to set the current brightness when you exit dTunes. (ie: if you exit dTunes when it's dim you will go back to the bightness that you started with).
Apple changed where it stores the brightness value in 2.2 and so a value of 0 was received and then set to 0 when you leave dTunes.
I've added extra lines of code to help with this in future updates.
It's the problem of writing jailbroken apps that use undocumented frameworks. It's reasons like this that made some apps get discontinued from the early firmwares 1.1 when 2.0 came out.
Feel free to PM me if you spot anything else.
Thanks,
Richard
WORKAROUND: All apps that use the brightness will be affected in 2.2. If you tilt a dimmed screen into a bright light you should be able to just see the icon. Go into settigns and click reset all. This should reset the brightness control - no need to restore.Last edited by stitchwod; 11-26-2008 at 12:56 AM.

I decided to try your reset method and opened BigBoss' ultra-bright Flashlight app. On exit the backlight dimmed about 50%. I opened Settings > General Settings > Reset > Reset All Settings - the light went all the way out and on reboot the 3G phone got stuck on the Apple logo - with the backlight out. After another restore, the light still stayed off - After setting up as a new phone and synching in iTunes, I tried resetting as described and the phone rebooted and the light came on - phew.
Not going to do that again...

Sorry, the workaround should only be applied to brightness issues with dTunes.
Obviously I didn't write the other apps that were affected so not sure how they are altering the brightness.
Basically dTunes just locates the brightness value in the plist file then resets this value when dTunes exits.
The problem with 2.2 was caused because Apple moved this system preference - I have no idea why.
Anyway, it's fixed now in 2.64 on Cydia.

I think I like 2.1 more every day. 2.2 has caused more problems than any other FW. I'm not losing dtunes and I'm not screwing up my backlight. 2.1 for me for a while!

What's the point of that brithness dimmer in dtunes anyway? If you don't want it to use to much battery sleep the friggen thing it still plays. Just for convenience I think this button should be removed it will cause less problems. Some people restored to fix this problem? That must suck if all you had to do is reset your settings or reboot twice fixed it for me.
