What is the difference between "carrier" and "banner" in Make it Mine?

On 1.1.4, MIM would change the "iPod" text to whatever I wanted. Do I select "carrier" for the same effect? And what does "banner" set?

carrier is the phone company id is and banner is the time of day resides
