Thread: PDANet trial alert

as quoted from another forum:
yeah, thats such a ripoff on how they make you completely unaware of it when upgrading, and a complete ripoff for charging $30, AND having to buy it for every phone(aka, if you have to replace your iphone you have to buy it again)
I MIGHT of payed $10 for it, but seeing as to how shady they did this, they can go screw themselves. Ill gladly spend my money elsewhere.

What bothers me the most is there is no mention of the $30 that I can find. Nothing on their website, nothing in the description of the 1.4 down load. seems really shady

No where in the app listing on Cydia did it state it was a trial app that would later require a fee to use it to it's full potential. At least with iPhone Modem it alerts you during use it's a trial and to stop the reminder to register you only pay $9.99. The only concern I have is if I have to replace my iPhone with a swap while within the 1 year warranty due to the developer ask for the IMEI to get the registration code. Though paying $9.99 for iPhone Modem is a lot cheaper than $29.00 to use PDANet.

So has anyone got any other ideas on how to get rid of that update notification from Cydia? Its getting kind of annoying.

i followed the directions for downgrading. Uninstalled, dropped the .deb into var/root/, performed the unpackage, but there's no app on the springboard....
I've tried restarting, and respringing through various programs, but only QuickGold (not even appflow) finds the pdanet app, i still can't get it on the springboard....
Any ideas guys? Thanks
BTW: one thing i thought of was that the app was in a 'category' when i uninstalled it through cydia... but that should be fine
Update: Seems it was 'poofed' as adding it to a category, and removing it fixed the problemLast edited by deenybird; 11-14-2008 at 07:46 PM. Reason: updated with fix

I have the same proble as deenybird... followed the directions but the icon won't appear in springboard. Only difference is un-poofing doesn't bring it back. Any suggestions? I have bosspref nad winterboard installed, but not categories, not quickgold, and not appflow.
EDIT: Fixed by uninstalling Bossprefs. Then reinstalled of course. Windows anyone?Last edited by mk750; 11-16-2008 at 02:42 PM. Reason: fixed the problem.

I've had my fair share of problems with PDANet. At the beginning it worked like a charm. Drained the battery as hell, but still. Since 1.4 it has just hanged and restarted the phone after a few minutes. I thought it was this upgrade that f**ked it up so I downgraded to 1.33 and thought it would be OK again as it were before. But no.
I'm am so fed up with PDANet. I'm considering buying one of the other alternatives, but they aren't as easy. But maybe they'll work? /O:

This is my first post...I removed 1.4, boss prefs then copied the file over to my iPhone using DiskAid, then used the terminal to run it. It did its thing, then I restarted the phone...nothing. Went into categories to see if it showed up on the list in there...nothing. Tried restarting the springboard via categories...nothing. Please help. I dont have a ssh tool for my Vista laptop to try it that way. but I wouldnt mind getting a ssh tool that would work to try it that way if everyone here agrees that using DiskAid cannot work.
Did I miss a step?
Edit: I also tried going into Cydia to see if it would prompt me for an upgrade and it didnt.
Got it! For some reason it wasnt showing up anywhere in cydia, quick gold, or categories but it eventually did after restarting and respringing several times.Last edited by Turb02; 11-17-2008 at 03:29 PM.

Cydia should remove this app from their Featured section or at least move it to Comercial App section...no point giving these guys free ads when they are being deceiving here

Seems to me the only way to get rid of it would be to hope that Cydia gets an update that allows you to set it to ignore certain app upgrades. Since Cydia is opensource, you could try asking around to see if someone could add that feature, but I wouldn't hold your breath.
I'd be very much in favour of a system like that though, not just because of PDANet. For example if you get a theme you really like and a few months later they bring out an update for it with something you just find really awful, it'd be nice to be able to say to Cydia "I don't want this one, tell me when the next one comes out". Granted with Winterboard themes you could just replace the bit you don't like with the old one, but it'd be far more helpful and easy just to have a simple Cydia override. I mean Windows has it. If you don't want an update, you just deselect it and tell Windows Update to ignore it in future. Surely it wouldn't be too hard to add such a feature to Cydia. Or perhaps they could set it so that if you open the update info page in Cydia, that's enough to disable the update notification. I dunno. I'm just spinning ideas here. Unfortunately I have absolutely no knowledge of programming (other than very basic stuff) so I have no idea if these methods are even possible let alone how to implement them.
And by the way, according to the PDANet website the trial is for 14 days.

Simple solution I found to make it work (to show icon when you install v1.33):
uninstall latest PdaNet, install v1.33 ( http://apt.modmyi.com/2debs/pdanet1.33.deb , log in to iphone using ssh and install it "dpkg -i pdanet1.33.deb" ) and find where it is installed ( mine was in
\private\var\stash\Applications.[random string]\PdaNet.app\
)
Copy the contents of the dir to your local drive (by sftp or whatever you use to access iphone), then upgrade it to the latest version that is showing the icon properly and make sure it is set to off (router = off) when you run it. Then overwrite the contents of the same dir with old files from v1.33 you copied before to your drive. Reboot iphone and it should work.
Oh yes, one more thing - it also fixes the update in cydia... it won't ***** about new version now. It will think it is running the latest version.Last edited by bsurt; 01-07-2009 at 12:38 PM.
