Is there a way to make Categories open up any faster or is that just the way it is??

You can install Backgrounder and use it with Categories.
There is a "keep resident" option in each Category folder's setting that let's you take advantage of Backgrounder.

After setting up Backgrounder with a Category folder, the first time opening will be slow as usual then every other time opening will be instantaneous.

I'm actually trying this out with two Category folders and it works well.
I will have to see how much battery life is affected.
