BOss Preffs a sure fire way to not use AT&T's internet??

so i just got my first ridiculous bill for data usage.. i cant say that i didn't expect it for the first bill, because about a week ago i learned that if you have Boss preffs and you turn the edge toggle off then it wont let you connect to the internet at all unless you have a wifi signal. now it seems that technically this should be a sure fire way not get a horrendous bill again, but id rather not find out the hard way.. i mean if i have to ge the data plan, its a heck of a lot cheaper than what the usage charges are without the plan.

anyone use the boss prefs edge toggle and not get usage charges?

iphone=data useage. i don;t understand what's the point of an iphone if u don't have a data plan. its what the whole shebang is about. just get yourself a data plan and enjoy.

One of my iphones does not have a data plan. OK my wife does not. I used boss prefs edge toggle to turn of edge and have not had any data charges on my wife's iphone. I check about once a week on the phone to make sure that I get the can not connect message.

Works fine for her. The wife did not want data because she still wanted to send MMS and that was the easiest way with out having to plot to get both.

If you live in a city with public wifi... have wifi at work and home then the data package isn't needed.

In most instances, I would agree iPhone needs a data plan. For us 1gen users who travel and take advantage of non-sub'd carriers, the ability to turn off EDGE is very necessary. Sometimes with a pre-paid account, so is pre-paid data. Leaving EDGE on by default with pre-paid data will quickly drain a recharge-card. Enabling when needed manages this nicely.

this was basically what i was looking to hear. that with the boss prefs edge toggle turned off the phone wouldnt connect to the internet without wifi period. now have you recieved a bill to really see if att is getting usage or not?

and i actually do live in a pretty well filled wifi city so whenever i need internet i can usually get it via wifi. no real need for a data plan for me.

My husband is one of those 3% that don't use data. He travels overseas quite a bit and uses his employer provided Blackberry for internet. Hes using a 2G 8 Gb unlocked and jailbroken with Winpwn.

What you may need to do with your Edge, is to check if your toggle for data roaming in the stock setting app is turned off. Sometimes, these toggles get out of sync.

What you

I have wifi at work, home an have access to over 20 secured netwoks depending on where I go.
At work I have to logon to the network after tripping the 5 minute no activity timer.
Plus they block a ton of websites. The 3G availability is pretty good as are the speeds.

Going other places, malls and so on, its nice to turn off the wifi and jsut use 3G. For me the added convenience of data on the run is well worth the $20 a month. No surprises at the end of the month.

Now if I could just get te data plan and no phone plan I would be all set.

Um... how about let the guy do what he wants with his phone?
Would you guys want someone telling YOU how to use your toys?

Original poster, you most certainly can avoid "Edge and 3G" charges by using BossPrefs.

This is about my 4th month with her edge turned off on the phone. Not one KB in data charges, she uses wifi at home and coffee shops and things like that. I check my bill and usage on line usually every other week along with the can not connect message just to make sure.

So I'm verry happy with boss preff for that. Glad to have helped.

The Edge toggle works great. Just be sure to fire up Safari after enabling it to be sure that it is working. And be sure that the data roaming inside of preferences is toggled off as well.

stop the crap about "no data plan? you don't deserve an iphone" nonsense. Who are you to decide what people wants and what they don't.

Back on topic. The toggle works fine, try out the "new" and "old" way that it describes inside.
