RAM optimization tips?

Does anyone have any great tips on how to maximize RAM usage so that some of the big games actually work?

We know the apple apps eat up RAM because they are always running. Closing Safari windows helps. But what else can be done? What processes can be killed?

For reference, here are some useful (but still inconclusive) threads:

SysInfo on FW 2.x

original SysInfo page for FW 1.x; does not mention not compatible with FW 2.x

some comments on backgrounder

RAM on iPhone 3G

30 MB available for apps

Using Top in mobile terminal

utilities we all need

For what it's worth, this is top running on the iPhone 3G via SSH.

Curious things include: why does it say 51M used but only 7.9M free? Shouldn't there be 128M to work with, not closer to 64M?

Would be interested to see other people's top screen shots.

ok, thanks guys. a few interesting things here. schumy does not have mobilemail or mobile safari running, while aaargg (etc) does not have mobilesafari running. how is this possible? (i suppose they might be open but not top processes.)

also, each of us have between 8-11 MB of free RAM. Maybe it is self-selecting that those with RAM issues are posting, but I wonder how typical that is?

Which of the last 4 memory columns are most important to look at in terms of the way the iPhone uses RAM?

i've been trying to figure out the same thing... the first ram column seems to be the ram that is reserved for the process and the 2nd one is the total including shared memory. at least that's my interpretation...

I force the closing of MobileSafari sometimes to avoid that, keep running it.

after a respring -- or even a reboot, mobilesafari and mobilemail are both running even if i don't open them. i guess a big question is here is how do you prevent them from automatically running?

i'm not using an application called 'respring' (don't know about it) but i can respring from within boss prefs or categories. i presume that is the same thing, right?

as for killall springboard -- i suppose i'll try that but then how do you launch anything after that?
