no, it's not the directory permissions thing:

drwxrwxrwx 5 mobile mobile 238 Oct  7 22:19 /private/var/mobile/

i also tried deleting my gmail account. adding it back in. but it still crashes.
it crashes about 10 messages in.
i limited it to 25 messages. changed to 1 line of preview.
changed it to no preview.

it still crashes.

any ideas?

try deleting the mail folder in /var/Mobile/Library but back it up first

This happens to me everyone once in while when an app tries to send an email. Creating my own works just fine.
