Ok, does anyone KNOW for a fact that AT&T can tell if you are using MyWi, or and downloading like a mad man. Has anyone had any contact with an AT&T employee and have them tell you they can check? Has anyone told them "send me the proof or the next person you hear from is my attorney?"
Please help, I'm not about to get slapped with a $45 bill every month, and lose my unlimited data. And will they actually change your plan and make you pay more without consent or telling you?
From what i hear.... (not personally confirmed) they send you a text saying you need to purchase a tethering plan... and if you do not call at&t and confirm they auto enroll you on that plan and you lose your unlimited grandfathered plan. From what I hear, if you do get this, you can just call at&t and say you are not tethering and you just are streaming alot of netflix and pandora.. (once again, Ive heard this). I hope this helps you out.
I also hear PDANET has come up with some new software option to HIDE how at&t can find out if you are tethering or not.
"New! Version 3.0 improves performance and fixes multiple connection issues. Now allows you to hide Tether usage."
Since this is what Dellman has 'heard' let me tell you what I've experienced:
I used tetherme for a long time for my laptop. But since I'm getting an iPad soon decided I should try MYWI out to see if it worked. I installed it and turned it on. I never even connected a device or laptop to it. Just ran it. Then I closed it. Seemed ok. 2 days later I get the auto enrollment email that is being referred to. Telling me I have until May 27th to respond or I'll be switched over to a tethering plan. I call At&t, at the number provided. He states that there was a "red flag" that notifies them that I'm tethering a device. I state I didn't, and says well their "red flags" are reliable, and if it's done again between now and the 27th I'll be enrolled in a data plan. I asked him if he could show me ANY proof as to what these red flags are saying, since of course I don't believe him. And of course he doesn't have that authority. So basically they're calling our bluff. And somehow they are able to tell if we're tethering using MYWI. Not sure about PDAnet, but they definitely haven't been able to tell using Tetherme.
Also of note, there's been some rumors that AT&T is just assuming you're tethering based on your usage. Well, recently my laptop was stolen, so for the past 2 weeks this has been way of surfing and facebooking, etc. So I have been using it alot of late for data. More than usual. Not sure if that was a trigger also. Anyway, this is what happened to ME and personally confirmed. I used Mywi 1 time and 2 days letter I got the email. This was just a few days ago btw.
