Thread: Is using too much MyWi bad for your phone?

Default Is using too much MyWi bad for your phone?
I have discovered the joys of MyWi via the free 4 day trial and I'm about to purchase it.

My plan is to go strictly to MyWi because AT&T's 3G service is actually faster than my current cable modem service, which is running me $32/month.

If I dump my cable modem service and use only MyWi will it be bad for my phone? I'm grandfathered into unlimited data so I'm not too worried about that.

Is there any other reason not to do this? It would save me close to $400 a year, so there's quite an incentive.

Umm well heres the deal on that you can get intouble if your constantly going over 5mb of data even though its unlimited you will being pull down so much bandwith that att will probably say something to you

    Thanks.

I assume you mean 5 GB and not 5 MB.

I may just use MyWi for a month and see what AT&T says. When I get my next statement from Brighthouse (my ISP) I'll check to see how much data I'm using a month.

We don't do much downloading...mostly just casual browsing (facebook, email, message boards, etc.), so I don't think we'd use an extraordinary amount to make AT&T call me crying.

Some people use 60-70gb a month with no problem, the worst they'll probably do is decrease ur bandwidth so ur internet slows down a bit. I highly doubt that they will charge u extra or disable ur internet If u go over 5gb.

maybe it does, but it's not as common as people think. And if it does happen to be you, you may be able to argue your way out of it. T-Mobile was actually sued for putting a data cap on an unlimited data plan (they no longer have that data cap. Not sure if they removed it or just changed it). The definition of a data cap is to lower speeds once u go over, not to charge extra. It should be on your contract. What they might do is charge you for tethering. But they only assume that you are tethering based on the amount of data you use. They have no proof of what you're really doing if you use mywi.

See it doesn't happen alot but it does happen especially if you are using it for the wrong reasons (not say you or anyone else is) but you can be flagged for pulling to much bandwidth But if your just using it for fb and social networking and google crap you will probably be fine just don't go crazy on downloads or porn lol

    lol agreed.

How can your 3G be faster than your home network anyway? For $30/month, I would assume your getting at least 5mbps

If you don't have the SpeedTest app (apple app store) then get it and check a 3G connection against any random wifi connection you can use and your question will get answered.

I have seen some absolutely pathetic wifi signals and many don't get close to .5 an mb. I've seen 3G signals close to 1mb.

If he is looking to cut cost, I'd dump junk dsl/cable net like that too.

I'm not sure what speed I'm suppose to be getting, but when I went to Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test to test my wifi compared to 3G the 3G download and upload speeds were three times faster!

Cutting costs is exactly what I'm trying to do...it's just an added benefit that the 3G is faster than my cable modem. My wife and I are trying to attack our debt (Dave Ramsey style) and this was just one of the ways we could free up some money.

Typical speeds of 3g on an iphone 4 which has HSDPA can go upto 5mbps. My verizon DSL at home in brooklyn new york can only get 3mbps. So my iphone tethering is in fact faster than my home internet.

But that 5mbps doesnt last long lol

I know verizon DSL can go as slow as 768kbps so iphone tethering is faster than that.

wow thats surprising...I have comcast cable modem and I get up to 22mbps according to speedtest. I'm surprised DSL technology still exists considering that it probably can't go faster than 10mbps. I guess it's just because of the low cost.

Yeah it is kind of sad. The current "max" speed of what I can get in a high population area in Brooklyn, NY is 5mbps, but I'd have to pay for their 7mbps plan because my house is just outside the loop length for 7, so I go down to 5. So i pay for their 3mbps plan and am satisfied with it.

The price difference isnt that high compared to cable internet, If i got time warner cable's triple play i'd pay $33 as opposed to my $30 now for TWC's 10mbps plan. But Id have to get their TV and phone service. Without all of the additions id pay $55. For what i use my internet, just isnt worth it.

    DSL<Cable

Low DSL cost is a result of low infrastructure cost.
You don't have to string new copper for DSL.
Everybody (used to) have a wired phone.
New construction is better off going fiber.
