USB on Mac: iPhone not detected for MyWi tethering
I'm trialing MyWi, and it works great on my Macs for tethering with wifi, but on several machines, I can't get it to work over USB. On one machine (Hackintoshed Dell Mini 10v with 10.6.0), it appears in the Network pref pane as "iPhone USB," but says the iPhone is either not plugged in or not responding. On my MacBook Pro (10.5.8), nothing network-related happens when I plug in the iPhone (just mounts in iTunes).
This is with a pwnage-jb'd 3GS on 3.1.2. I've turned on Internet Tethering in Settings->General->Network, and flipped the toggle for USB/BT tethering in MyWi to "On." iPhone's wifi is off. Again, wifi tethering works fine.
Is there anything else I need to do? Maybe something on the Mac end of things?
Thanks!
Nevermind, found my problem, and it was a dumb one on my part. Seems to be working now!Last edited by miked378; 01-08-2010 at 02:52 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

So when I was trying to set this up, I was trying to get the Ethernet (en4) network connection working with the iPhone, and it never seemed to do anything on the Network pref pane when I plugged the phone in.
It wasn't until I gave up and went to quit System Preferences and was prompted to apply the new Network settings that it seemed to work.
Now, the Ethernet (en2) network port always appears in the interface list on the Network Pref pane, with a red "not connected" dot next to it. When I plug in the iPhone, nothing happens until I set the MyWi USB tethering toggle to "on," at which point the dot turns green, and it gets an IP address.
(Note that the Ethernet (en2) interface is the one for the 10.5 machine I'm on now -- I went through the exact same process, with the exact same problem, on a 10.6 machine, and it was solved the same way -- I'm just not sure whether the interface on 10.6 is called "Ethernet (en2).")
So -- don't be discouraged if, while monkeying around with the Network Preference Pane, nothing seems to work. Just close the pref pane, apply the new settings, and see if it works. Oh, and make sure that the USB Tethering toggle on MyWi is set to on, too. ;-)
Good luck!

In order to tether the connection I found that I had to turn USB Tethering on in MyWi and also go into the iPhone Settings/General/Network/ and turn on Internet Tethering. If the option doesnt show up there go to Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings/. This should only take a few seconds to reset.

Well I have to say, I went out and got my first iPhone just a week ago. Instantaneously, I started inquiring about tethering, why pay when you have a data plan, right?! Well Tethering led me to jailbreaking, since help*dot*benm*dot*at doesn't seem to work ( I tested myself on ver. 3.1.3 unJailbroken) So Spirit was kind enough to hook me up, then Cydia came into play with a little OpenSSH with WinSCP doing the dirty work I dropped a nice free ver. of MyWi into the /AutoInstall that needed to be created. Then I went app hunting ie: Installuous, Backgrounder, TouchMouse, MCleaner (another free ver.) and so far to top it off w/Cylay... ohh and a package of ********* * can't forget that! So neither here nor their, I set-up MyWi... awesome first time go! Yay!! What about usb Tethering (* You know the whole point about this thread... I know I throw in way to much detail, but I am happy that I learned the whole sys. in a night and finished before 3:30 in the A.M.*) That is when I thought as I read this...***Because this is where I had been stuck*** If I unplug the iPhone, disable WiFi, disable setting/general/networking/internet tethering, soft-boot, plug in iPhone, wait for sync 8(, enable usb, disable WiFi, go to internet tethering enabled, open MyWi & enable backgrounder, then check laptop for Lan Con 2( or whatev you labeled yours as) (joined) in networking and internet, was golden. Then double tap firefox and google opens! Perfect!
I am nobody.
Nobody is perfect.
Therefore I am perfect!

After a few days of researching heres what I came up with:
Checklist:
- Uninstall PDAnet if you have it
- Disable all network adapters (Network & Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings)
- Make sure latest iTunes is open and that it recognizes your phone
- Make sure latest MyWi is installed correctly (and that you rebooted after installing it)
- Enable USB Tethering via MyWi
Now heres happened with mine.. It kept trying to connect and in the end it showed a yellow yield sign, I thought it didnt work.. Sure enough once I tried google, it worked and the Network Settings panel popped up asking me to categorize the new network.
For some reason though, my computer takes A LOT longer to recognize the connection than before (like last week) before I restored.. It would conenct in seconds, now it takes like 30-1 minute to connect and shows a yellow yield sign, but still works.

Thanks
I tried your steps and got my USB tethering working again. It has mysteriously stopped working in the past so I am going to save these instructions. Oddly enough, I have two of the three options working. Bluetooth and USB working, Wifi not. I am off to another thread to work on the Wifi although I fear it is something on my Macbook as my Airport is self-assigning it's IP address
