    Here is what I use

For Full 1280 x 720 source video, I use 1136 x 640 in my mp4 file. This gives you the maximum resolution that the iphone is capable of displaying. If you want to leave the source resolution then you can. The iPhone 4 is capable of playing files with a resolution up to 720p. If you want the file to be a bit smaller, then use
960 x 544, there is really not a visible difference.

For movies that the source is like 1920 x 816 (1080), then you need to make sure that you end up with a resolution like 1280 x 544 (with 1280 being the max for the i4). If that file is too big for you then you can adjust down to something like.......

    1136 x 480 or 960 x 416

The Iphone 4 and the 3GS do not have the same resolution screen. Why do you think that the iPhone 4 is billed as having the Retina Display.

The 3GS has a 640 x 480 resolution with no native capability to play 720p video. The iPhone 4 has a 960 x 640 resolution, but has the ability to play a 1280x720 mp4 natively. That is why it is called HD

Well, the screen resolution also depends on what device you want to put the video on.
The black frames on top and buttom like in normal movies can be trimed/croped by iFunia or video tools like that.
