Managing video formats.

I have several AVI movies that I mostly watch use a mini for my entertainment center. however I would like to be able to watch these videos on my iPhone as well. I have been looking for some time for a good simple video converter and haven't really found one. HandBrke is quite good however I haven't been able to find settings that work. I am trying to convert an AVI file to something that can be watched on my iPhone without changing the image size or doing any cropping and without losing any quality. Using the Apple Universal preset an bumping the Quality to 100% a 1.5G AVI becomes a 12.27G m4v and to top it off it can't be played. If I use the iPhone & iPod Touch preset it crops the video. Does anyone know of a good video converter that simply takes the source AVI video and converts it to a working M4V without changing anything other then the file type?
