The green one is in a boot loop (verbose boot is enabled), and the blue one was on that screen for about 2 hours, and now is on a black screen, and cant be turned on or off, no DFU or restore (broken top button)
and bricked means not able to be used, and last I checked, i couldn't use either of these iPhones, so yeah... I would consider both of these phones bricked

Well, "bricked" normally means "cannot ever be used again", not "isn't working right now but is easily fixed" (you can just do a restore in iTunes, worst case). It was also unclear whether you had simply tried rebooting (although normally the watchdog will get angry pretty quickly and force one, but a manual reboot is still indicated sometimes).
As for the iPhone 2G, I have record of over 16,000 iPhone 2G's who have managed to upgrade to Cydia 1.1 over the last day or so and were actually able to get into it and use it, so I'm pretty certain there is no issue with the iPhone 2G somehow not liking Cydia 1.1.
It should also be noted that Cydia doesn't actually make any modifications to your system other than installing itself as an app (it has a little thing that runs at startup to install things from PwnageTool, but this feature is entirely separated and even fails safely on non-jailbroken devices: that's how safe it is).
Now, one could imagine SpringBoard being very unhappy about this new application that was added (maybe it can't parse the Info.plist file), but that wouldn't be hardware dependent: that would be based on the version of SpringBoard. I tested Cydia 1.1 down to iPhone OS 2.2, so if you have a 2.0 or 2.1 device I'd be willing to believe there is some kind of issue (and would love to help debug it).
As for why you are in this boot loop now, I'd go for the standard: 1) unrelated issue, but not noticed until you installed something new, or 2) there were other upgrades available, you chose "Completed Upgrade", and it was one of those other upgrades that caused the problem (maybe you also upgraded biteSMS or something like that). I don't think there were any tethered jailbreaks for the iPhone 2G, so I will leave off the usual #3 ;P.

red_zone: Can you give us an exact description of what happened after installing Cydia 1.1? After it finished displaying the log output, did it prompt you with a Close Cydia button or a Reboot Device button?
After pressing the button, describe fully what you did and what the phone was doing.
Note: I have upgraded 2 iPhone 2G's and had no problems with either one (except below).
Saurik: I appreciated the DM's you sent me some time back, but you left me no way to write you back since you don't follow me on Twitter. :-(
PS: There does seem to be an issue with SpringBoard restarts on iPhone 2G with Cydia 1.1.1. Cydia is unloading com.apple.SpringBoard (or it is getting unloaded somehow, haven't looked at your code lately) and it is not getting loaded again. So, for example, I got a "Restart SpringBoard" button in Cydia and pressed it. It goes to the spinning busy icon and never comes back (this has only happened since Cydia 1.1.1). I ssh'd in and ran "launchctl list" and SpringBoard is not loaded. I run "launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.SpringBoard.plist" and it starts.
Personally, the best way to restart SpringBoard that I have found is "launchctl stop com.apple.SpringBoard".Last edited by Pushfix; 03-30-2011 at 01:13 AM. Reason: Added SpringBoard issue
