Apple to Drop iOS 4.1 on September 8. Jailbreakers and Unlockers Should Stay Away Until New Tools Are Available

The official UK website of Apple has this confirmation up on the site that iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod touches will drop on Wednesday, September 8th. This is probably the same day when the new iPod lineup for fall 2010 (iPod nano, iPod shuffle and iPod touch 4G) will also go retail.

If your iOS device relies on a jailbreak or a carrier unlock, make sure you keep your “clicky” fingers away from that tempting “Update” button in iTunes until and unless new jailbreak and unlock tools are available. There is currently no ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) as to when can we expect these new tools to be made available. But I am pretty sure that they will be released once they are ready for primetime use! Till then, make sure that you have PDF Patch installed from Cydia on iOS 4.0.1 to keep your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch safe from PDF vulnerability in iOS 4.0.1.

We will let you know whenever these new jailbreak and unlock tools are available, including full how-to guides. Stay tuned for that.

We can't save the blobs until we actually install the new firmware right? Also does cydia automatically save every new firmware blob for us after we hit the "make life easier" button right?

You can save for whatever Apple is signing, regardless of whether you've installed it or not. That's what TinyUmbrella is for.

And while saving blobs for 4.0.2 might seem silly, 4.0.2 might end up being a safe fallback firmware, depending on how the next jailbreak works.

Although Cydia is automatic, it's not very fast. There's a lot of ECIDs in its database to make requests for. I think it's my responsibility to back my blobs up, so I use TinyUmbrella to force it when I choose. That way, if for whatever reason the signing window is really short, I don't miss out.

I believe there are approximately 1.75 million ECIDs in Saurik's database. Let's remove 400k assuming they're iPads (they have no new firmware until November, we hope).

1.35 million SHSH blobs, assuming one blob is stored (but NOT cached and thrown into the database, therefore not shown on the home screen) per second, 24/7. It'll take Saurik 15 days 15 hours to obtain all the blobs.

I think the fastest I've ever seen a new firmware drop is 24 days (4.0 to 4.0.1, 21 June to 15 July). Theoretically Cydia will have everyone cached and then some in that time, but why risk it?

Running TinyUmbrella will give your blobs to Cydia immediately (but won't cache them immediately, so they won't appear in your device's on-file list immediately). Besides, redundancy when dealing with files this important (unique, time-sensitive blobs necessary for later functioning of your several-hundred-dollar iDevice) just makes sense.

How about the time between 4.0.1 and 4.0.2? That seemed like a pretty small window, I just can't remember the dates.

July 15th to Aug 11th - but that was just a security patch.

I'm looking forward to it. Bought a iphone 4 a couple weeks ago and it was pre-loaded with 4.0.2. I miss my jailbreak.

Not for the JB or unlock.

    It never normally is.
Apple UK was showing Coming 8th September - it's now 7:50am on 8/9/10 and Apple UK is now showing 'Coming soon'.

so probably it has been postponed. normally they dont change it to coming soon from a definite date. coming soon is always vague which means any time in next few months.

Unless it just means it won't be coming out until 6pm
