shsh blobs are Apple's digital signature needed to restore to a particular firmware. They are not needed to jailbreak but they are needed in the event you want to downgrade your firmware. As soon as Apple releases a firmware update it no longer allows you to restore to earlier firmwares. Having your shsh blobs saved makes this possible. Originally Posted by dscottjr81

Just purchased two 3GS's for my girlfriend and dad yesterday both were on 4.0 already so I have three devices itching to get non Apple code ran on them
($400 for a white and black 3GS perfect condition. Hell of a deal!)
