iH8sn0w has written a very detailed guide to getting 4.0 jailbroken on a new bootrom 3gs! It requires quite a few tools he wrote, but hey, at least it works!

Note: This is a tethered jailbreak,much like Blackra1n was, so to reboot you'll have to run iBooty (download link in the linked thread). Time for us iDongle users to rejoice!
