Not sure if this helps but here is my experience withthe wifi issues... Myself and a co-worker (both 3gs iphones on 3.1.2) Have the exact same wifi issue after using blackra1n, If we restart our phones like 30 times we can catch a break and our wifi turns on... It ALWAYS stays on unless we reboot our phones... Then its off again and we have to restart over and over through out the day to get it going again. It stays on once it starts working as long as you DO NOT REBOOT THE PHONE.
Pretty frustrating...
ALSO... I jailbroke a 2g back in the day for another co worker who never has had wifi problems on 1.1.4 and they have decided to stay there.
This is my 5th iphone and the ONLY one that has had this issue is the one I used Blackra1n on...
Also... I re-jailbroke my phone and the wifi worked again... all the way up until the point of running blackra1n and then I imediately lost it...
Hope this helps in some trial and error....

Continuing my ventures with this wifi issue, when I got to manually connect to the access point, my iphone says that it can not scan for networks. Although my iphone has a mac address under the "About" section.
Also, Using Cyder... How do I install the packages? I've gotten the packages to cydia auto-install, but cant / dont know how to install.

iphone wifi problem overview
Hello,
I have iPhone 3G 16GB which suffers from Wifi problem. I am not the first owner, so i don't know what has been done with it, however, now it's on 3.1.3 + 05.12.01.
From my expertise I doubt it's a sw problem. The symptoms are:
1. (sometimes!) wifi chip is not recognized at all at iphone bootup (wifi menu greyed out)
2. the cooling hack works - when i cool or warm my iphone above certain level, the wifi starts working normally. then as it's warming up/cooling down, wifi starts disconnecting more frequently, up to unability of connect at all and loss of ability to even scan for any network. cooling it again helps.
3. the logs from iphone console (through iphone configuration utility) suggest its not signal level problem. even at the last attempts to connect, the rssi stays the same or above of the first successful connects. (and i think in par with other working iphones)
4. also, bt is working normally. wifi and bt are using the same rf band, same antenna and same signal paths.
Someone somewhere stated that 3.1 fw allowed iphone wifi to use higher power levels when transmitting which effectively is frying the chip. although i doubt that the chip could even at the highest levels fry itself, i believe it can compromise the chip mounting (bga) by changing its package dimensions caused by extreme temperature change.
I have a few logs from iphone console when it is trying to connect and succeeds or fails. There are two or three reasons of failing:
1. unable to initialize chip = unable to load firmware = chip is unable to communicate with serial eeprom outside of the chip itself (i think).
2. SDIO timeout = chip is not responding or responding crap (CRC errors)
3. unable to send packet & disconnect = essentialy same as previous.
The iphone tries to reset the SDIO communication controller at first, than the wifi chip, then reload its firmware. When fails for 3 times, it gives up, but in GUI its not visible at all - just the wheel is still running and no networks are being found.
I think, those are pointing straight to chip connection issue (i.e. the digital part, not the RF) = cracked joints (repairable) OR to some inner-chip failure (unrepairable). The chip pinout would help greatly but it's nowhere to be found..
The fact that guys at gsmhosting.com forum already repaired some iphones by rehotting the wifi modules confirmes it. I've already tried that with my hot air station but so far no success (i believe the temperatures i've used were too low, around 140°C at the shielding). I'm giving it another round sometimes next week.
However, nothing is 100 %, so I'm giving a 3 % chance it may be some temperature management issue (by which i mean a sw problem).
I'm open to any suggestions or followups, I may post my aforementioned iphone logs or do some tests if wanted. Just my 2 cents to resolve the problem

Thanks for ur insight @moole !! i had posted similar logs a couple of posts above..
Now the problem seems to have worsened and the wifi firmware is trying to get loaded every time i unlock the screen.. this causes SDIO CMD timeouts.. finally the phone will not wake up durin an incoming call !!! the battery drains like 1% every 10 minutes even without any plugins runnin in the background.. so i will be out of battery in less than 12 hours
..
Damn.. i also tried restoring and neutering the bootloader/baseband again and again.. not much luck !
HOPE its not a hardware problem.. cos I cant even have it opened n fixed...
cheers
NK

Someone asked for this to be posted on the Blog - as it's nothing to do with the Dev Team it's not going there and I take no responsibility for this, have not tried it and do not know if it works but thought I'd pass it on:
Hi, I would like to make an anonymous submission please; because apple crawls this 24/7: On certain networks (such as Rogers in Canada) a tethered restart will make the WiFi unusable and unable to connect to any networks (this WiFi problem has been widely noted). A WiFi-reset or full-reset will not fix the problem on some networks/iPhones as has been suggested/recommended. The solution: Do a tethered blackra1n restart with the SIM-card REMOVED! Once the OS is running without a SIM-card then ENSURE you are within your carrier's coverage area. Next insert your SIM-card. Once the iPhone's radio 'handshakes' with the tower you will be able to connect to WiFi networks again. I'm not sure why this works but it works ALWAYS! Sorry for trying to submit this comment the wrong way Admin! If you don't mind can you please post it anonymously? TY!He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

hi guys,
while i'm googling i found you! i'm iphone 3g 3.1.3 + 5.12bb and at&t unlock. my iphone has wifi that connect only if i stay very close with router. some day while i'm testing powerfull i discover that if i turn on bt my wifi works regular and very well (with full strenght) else if my bt off don't works. some day ago my bt don't turn on from setting bar so i downloaded form cydia ibluetooth and i can turn on my bt from there and my wifi works good. to prevent a battery drain i:
turn on bt from ibluetooth
turn on wifi
respring from sbs( and my bt turn off)
now i use this settings. if you want i can post some file (i've go ssh).
we can fix this bug if we work togheter
bye bye
sorry for my english!

I also have a 2G that is unlocked and jailbroken running 3.1.2. The WiFi used to work without issues and now with 3.1.2 it's no existent. I also have another 2G running 3.1.2 that is also unlocked and jailbroken and it has no issues with WiFi.
The phone with the problem just doesn't find wifi. The little grey wheel icon just sits there and spins. I tried WiFiFoFum and it does not find anything either. The phone has a WiFi and Bluetooth address.
