Can Cydia Break Apple's App Store Monopoly?
Cydia founder Jay Freeman, aka Saurik, is about to announce a challenger to the Apple anti-competitive fortress, an app store for jailbroken devices where you can purchase anything you like, whether Apple approves or not.

sounds promising, but why did it take so long to come about? Seems to me now is a worse time due to Apple's stance on just jailbreaking the phone...

Cydia's been around for a long time, he's just making it public now to bring more attention to Jailbreaking and Apps that are not in the App Store. He's making it public now probably because Apple is trying to make Jailbreaking illegal.
