USB trouble please help

Hello!,

I am having trouble is you have any ideas please help. I went to plug in my printer that I have used religiously since August and a dark gray screen overlayed the whole screen of my macbook saying I need to restart my computer. No reason stated or anything. This also happened when I plugged in my usb flash drive and my gps for updates......but my Iphone works fine in both usb plugs, syncs and everything. firewire works great too.....just other components even though I have used them before.... any advise before I do a archive & install? also the firefox keeps crashing which is only recently. I am running 10.5.6 on a macbook if it matters.

that is strange... i have installed printers and flashdrives many times

Archive & install did the trick...hope it helps people in the future if they have the same problem.
