I bought my macbook pro 17'' 2.6ghz last year. I took it home and messed with it and everything was fine until I laid down on the couch and put it on my knees and the screen would not stay up. Well I thought " I will just look online to see if I can tighten the hinges somehow". Turns out you cannot tighten the hinges on them, they have to be replaced. It also turns out on the 17'' macbook pro there is a problem with almost all of them and apple will replace them for free. So if you are having this problem and you are not under warranty, take it there anyways because they know it is a common problem and should fix it at no charge. Just a heads up....___________________________________________

Nice info, next time I head home I'll see if my dad's notebook has this issue. Is it just a single batch or a majority of the machines that have this problem?
