Ok so I got a WD 1TB external. Now I already have about 300gb worth of movies and stuff on it. What I want to do now is to have a seperate partition on the external of about 300GB so i can use TimeMachine to backup my Macbook Pro with. Anyway to do this easily without deleting anything currently on the external? Thanks.

Time machine only works well on os extended journaled format. So as long as you formated the whole drive like that from the start then you should be ok to partition it with the disk utility. There is always that chance though that it can mess up.

Are there steps? I don't want to lose anything currently on the external :/

There is always a chance, but most likely no.
