[ solution ] Volume not working in OS X with digital output
OK, so today I decided to hook up my Mac (Dual G5) to my receiver and power some decent speakers with this thing.
Except... Mac volume control doesn't work with optical output. Yah, you can't change the system volume. I guess there's a technical reason having to do with the digital signal and the method Apple uses to adjust volume control... but it seems pretty lame to me. In-app sound sliders work (as in, iTunes' volume slider works fine), but your keyboard no longer controls volume.
Anyway, the only time I ever adjust the volume is for my music - so I began to search for a way to control iTunes volume with the Mac keyboard. My search led me to Sizzling Keys, which allows you to bind any combination of keys and a modifier (or any Function key) to all sorts of iTunes commands (way more than just the volume I want - but it works perfect). The free version works fine for me, although if you're serious about iTunes/keyboard interaction, $5 gets you their pro version with even more features. I turned off the default F12 (volume up) and F11 (volume down) button actions (which are some expose and dashboard stuff), and assigned those to iTunes volume up and down.
Now I'm set.
Thought I'd share for if anyone ever has the same issue!.
