    I know this is an old thread, but just in case you are still looking, you can do it through terminal with the chflags command. you can hide a file/folder by opening terminal and typing

    chflags hidden /path/to/folder
    to unhide use "nohidden" in the above command

    The above only unhides a specific folder. Incase you wanted to make all hidden files and folders unhidden you can enter this into terminal:

    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
    then
    killall Finder
