Go into iTunes Preferences>Advanced>iTunes Music Folder Location and click Change. Then navigate to appropriate folder on your external.

Id like to say that that worked, but it didnt.
restarted itunes 3 times and only 50-60 songs were recognized. Ive since spent my evenings and spare time having to re-import each tune when asked, so i dont lose my play count/history.

When you reimport all your music, all that is doing is putting a copy back on your computer. So basically you could have just copied all your music to your external instead of just moving it. What was the name of the folder you tried to use as the iTunes Music Folder on the external?
