Google Follows Apple into Fashion World for New Talent
When Apple recently turned to the world of fashion to find its next head of retail operations - the former CEO of Burberry, Angela Ahrends - the tech titans in Cupertino apparently set a new precedent for where hot industry talent can be plucked.
Late Thursday, Google announced that it has also made a strategic hire from within the fashion space.
Ivy Ross - a former executive from Calvin Klein, Coach, Gap, and others - will formally join Google on Monday to lead the company's fast-moving Glass efforts.
"I have spent my career--Calvin Klein, Swatch, Coach, Mattel, Bausch & Lomb, Gap and, most recently, Art.com--at the intersection of design and marketing, trying to answer questions like this in different ways, for different products," she explained in a Google+ entry last night.
"But Glass is especially cool," Ross continued, "as no one has really tried to answer them with a product like this before. That’s our job, Explorers! I'm just getting started on Glass, but, because of all of you, and your thoughtful and smart feedback, I feel like I have an incredible head start. And I look forward to learning even more from you, and experiencing Glass together."
With Google poised to ramp up its focus on attractive designs from the world of premium, luxury and sports eyewear, it looks like Google's new hire will contributed significantly to that effort.
