Default Time Publishes Apple 'Doomsday Clock'

Amidst an ever strengthening chorus of criticisms that Apple is on the "cusp of irrelevance" if it doesn't return to its innovative roots with the release of a bold new product in a new product category (and soon), Time magazine today published what's being billed as an Apple doomsday clock.

In fact, by author Harry McCracken's account, if Apple fails to release the long-rumored iWatch within the next 60 days, Apple may fall past the point of no return, especially with a growing number of tech companies forging ahead with great success in the wearables market (like Google formal announcement of Android Wear this week).

“They only have 60 days left to either come up with something or they will disappear,” Trip Chowdhry, managing director at Global Equities Research, said this week. “It will take years for Apple’s $130 billion in cash to vanish, but it will become an irrelevant company … it will become a zombie, if they don’t come up with an iWatch.”

By McCracken's admission, saying that Apple could be doomed if it doesn't dazzle us with an iWatch (or something new and exciting) within the next 60 days isn't just "another wacky over-the-top Apple prediction." The market is truly growing restless with Apple's slow and uninspiring pace of product releases in recent years.

And so the clock is now ticking.

Do you believe Apple is really this close to a detrimental downfall if something isn't done imminently to revitalize the brand's reputation for innovation?

I can't understand how the imminent or non-imminent release of a wearable device will send Apple into oblivion..

Haha, the best part of this is that TIME actually paid someone to write this crap. What was the price of such a desperate article, I wonder.

The media gets on Apple's case because they're the pinnacle of corporate and capitalist success, and they achieved it without the "help" of labor unions. They want Apple to fail so they can point at them and shout, "SEE? Capitalism doesn't work!"

    WHAT !!
Does no one understand it takes at least 3 years from idea, to prototype, to production testing and release .

Cast your mind back 3 years to 2011. Tim said
"Guys we've bet the house on this, it's going to be hard, it's going to be difficult, and a struggle, so go off and in 3 years we'll release a PINK iphone "!!!!

And in 3 years he did it

    Apple innovation knows no bounds

No, you silly, uneducated Conservative, they're not trying to jab at Capitalism for this. What the hell? How would labor unions have anything to do with Apple's success anyway? And how would Apple's decline have anything to do with Capitalism not working? Do you even know what Capitalism is? Or what labor unions are? Turn off the Fox News and at least Wikipedia the words you hear, for those words aren't as empty as your understanding of them.

    Please.

I was about to make a joke and say, "They can't wait for the iWatch either, so they publish articles like these to try to light the fire under Apple's feet? Silly humans." But your comment was so stupid it just whisked away any comedic effect.

What they're doing is the same thing everyone else is doing—they're saying something that is both controversial and (has already been) repeated into tedium so that they can sell magazines. The truth is never so banal because it's rarely ever sold.

Ok.. Need to stop reading Time Magazine. They publish anything these days. This is plain idiotic..! Who really cares about a wearable gadget like say an iWatch or something similar. It's really lame..

It's not so much the deadline that would kill them, it's how innovative the next product is, think when they launched the iPod, iPhone, etc it was years ahead of mass market products. If they can pull it off again they will be fine even if it takes 61 days.

Yeah, this will certainly be the end of Apple if they don't release an iWatch soon. How stupid is that? Look at how late they were to the MP3 player market... yet they seem to dominate that market today. Even non i-Pod mp3 players (if they even exist anymore) are being referred to as "i-Pods" today. And the iPhone was not one of the first "smart" phones, yet they seem to be doing pretty well on that front too. Being "first" does not always mean being "best"... and Apple takes the best approach when releasing a product.

Apple doesnt even have to innovate that much, they just have to keep us up to date on the newest tech, I mean sure some innovation but nothing mind blowing, and I would still buy their products as would most people. Some people think it's because were sheep but it's because the Iphone is a universal device now. Everyone has easy accessibility to apps/music/movies etc. and knows its interface. The tech is good and fast. Itunes is very universal as well, honestly I think itunes is the reason apple had so much success, Android still doesnt have a good computer - android tech that connects all of the devices.

It isn't neccesarily about the "iWatch" or whatever they may/may not call it. It's about the fact that they haven't released anything spectacular in a while, and that is what made Apple what Apple is today. I use a myriad of Apple products, but I have to agree with him.

Article says lack of innovation is what will doom Apple not just the release if iWatch, which is true don't know why people complain and say it is wrong.
All tech company have a doomsday clock, lack of innovation or new product starts this doomsday clock.
iWatch need to be released soon to catch up on market share which will only reset this doomsday clock, it does not shut it down.

What ever happened to the good ole days of innovation and surprise. Many people say it died with Steve Jobs on Apples part. Those kind of guys are not easily replaced. Steve's boots are far bigger than Tim's feet.
I believe if Apple doesn't surprise us, and release something the other tech company's have already brought to market it will be just another option.
I really hope they don't pawn another iOS device in the shape of a watch off on us. I will not not buy it. All Apple products are becoming the same due to a lack of innovation. How many devices do you need to carry on a daily basis that do the same thing. Give me one device that does it all.
Better just come up with something that will wow us.

Don't see smart watches being the make or break item! Yeah FaceTime on a watch would be cool when down the pub! But would I use it daily? Prob not! And having to charge a watch all the time is just stupid! Let's wait till we can get a power source that can last a good amount of time!

This is ********. Who is this Time Magazine? Do you think Apple will fall just because wearable product cannot release by the next 60 days?
