Report: Google to Open Retail Store in Apple Territory
The scuttlebutt in New York today is that Google is not only proceeding with its retail strategy, it's also planning to open its first retail store in Apple territory (to be fair, of course, Apple has so many retail locations today that almost any area could be considered "Apple territory").
On Thursday, Crain's New York Business reported that Google is poised to set up shop on Greene Street in New York City's SoHo neighborhood. If so, Google's shop would be just a stone's throw from Apple's hugely popular location in that same general location on Prince Street.
Retail experts say that deep-pocketed tech giant Google is near to signing a lease at 131 Greene St. for what would be its first brick-and-mortar store in the country. Some say its arrival could put Greene Street on shoppers' maps, just as the arrival of another tech titan did for a nearby Prince Street 13 years ago.
Although Google is still generally thought of as a primarily software and service-based company, the Internet search giant is said to be quickly developing an arsenal of hardware, including smartwatches and other wearable tech beyond Google Glass.
Google reportedly wants to have its retail footing in place by the time Google Glass becomes commercially available.
