Intel Buys Smartwatch Maker on Apple's Radar
A company that Apple was reportedly interested in potentially acquiring has been acquired. And Apple isn't the winning bidder.
TechCrunch confirmed today that Intel won the Basis auction and will cough up $100 million to close the deal, sources say. It should be, noted, however, that others say the final price tag may be closer to $150 million.
If you're not familiar, Basis makes smartwatches with health trackers built into them. Along the way, the device manufacturer has secured 7 percent of this young but fast growing market.
"As Intel was all about the wearables this year at CES, we’re assuming that this buy is an attempt to further its foothold (wristhold?) in the space," today's report reads.
In addition to Apple, Google was also said to be interested in Basis, but Intel was ultimately the one to step up with the right price to seal the deal.

All I want in a smart watch is a heart rate monitor and a face that will show a second hand on the clock. I'm really not asking for much, but it can't be as huge as that galaxy gear. That's just nuts. They can have my jailbreak when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.
