Default iTunes Business Alone Now Bigger Than Many Multinational Companies

Apple's iTunes business is bigger than many realize. In fact, it's bigger than many well-known multinational corporations.

Asymco analyst Horace Dedium reports that iTunes is now responsible for raking in more revenue than such venerable corporate brands as Xerox, CBS, and even U.S. Steel.

The gross revenues for Apple's iTunes business are now roughly $7 billion per quarter. Annually, iTunes/Software/Services group had gross revenues of $23.5 billion (that's growth of 34% year-over-year). And these numbers are poised to balloon further, ad evidenced by Apple's most-recent record-breaking quarter of hardware sales.

"On a yearly basis iTunes/Software/Services is nearly half of Google’s core business and growing slightly faster," Dedium reports. "The iTunes “empire” of content and services would be ranked as number 130 in the Fortune 500 ranking of companies (slightly below Alcoa and above Eli Lilly)."

If it wasn't for iTunes & Apple's ecosystem, the iPhone would have been dead long ago.

The ecosystem and the phone are one of the same... So no duh. The iPhone would have been just fine with out iTunes..

If there was no batteries in this world ... then you're right the iPhone would have never made it.

Thats why I don't know why the money investors get all up in arms over the #'s when they drop a bit. HELLO, Apple could just lease the OS and make a trillion haha! They have so many options that they have yet to act upon its crazy. They will be here for a looooong time.

Those figures can't be solely attributed to iTunes - as aforementioned, it's the ecosystem as a whole that drives the revenue, not just a single product. If Apple didn't have iTunes and the App Store, sales for the iPhone wouldn't be as great and if the iPhone/iPod/iPad wasn't so successful, iTunes wouldn't generate that much revenue. The more people who have iDevices and therefore a platform to access iTunes and spend money there, the greater iTunes' revenue will be. Apple have done a great job perfecting this eco-system and locking people into it.
